    Fun times

For your reading enjoyment; Yesterday while finishing up my flush and clean and putting the coolant back in, I jumped up into the boat and without thinking, fired her up. Guess what I forgot to do........ With in 2 minutes I had completely destroyed the exhaust shutter, impeller and...

    In the process of Sanding?

I put 3 coats on my hull btm, let each coat cure and used green scotch brite to scuff up the paint. Applied with a short nap roller and tipped of with a good quality brittle brush.

    Inspection cover leak 1984 470

Now that the engine is drained...., the coolant was pretty cruddy after 4 hrs of run time, can I do a coolant flush without a thermostat installed, thinking the new thermostat might get messed up or clogged. Or should I get 2 thermostats, use one for the flush. I did clean the cast iron exhaust...

    Inspection cover leak 1984 470

Gauges are all brand new Faria, To be safe I`m going to order new thermostat and sender, both were original to the engine and looked OK, but I guess not, small investment to be sure. The Mr Gasket cap sounds like a good investment for peace of mind as well, thanx for the tip, Cheers

Hydraulic Pump Wiring (black wire floating free)

Attach that ground(blk) wire to the pumps mounting frame or any where you have a good grounding point. In button is leg down, up is up for trim up to limit, both ups together to raise the leg for trailering, at least that`s how it works for my boat.

    Inspection cover leak 1984 470

Well I believe I`ve got this licked, wife and I were out this morning for an hr, no leaks. Due to the bays temp, 9deg C, the engine temp never went above 125deg, is that ok, manual says 140-160 is normal operating temp. cheers

    In the process of Sanding?

Home building/hardware stores has a brand of rust/marine paint that is awesome. I`ve used it, it takes a while to cure but once cured its tough as nails. Reconmmented to me, by a marina sales rep, of all people, who`d of that. Beuti-tone rust coat its an alkd paint, use in well ventilated area...

    Inspection cover leak 1984 470

Decided not to buy a used cover, odds are they`d all be distorted, not wasting money that way. I replaced the cover with one I made from 1/2" aircraft grade aluminum, machined it to fit properly, distributor notch, bolt hole recess for o-ring seals. This does not flex or distort at all, simple...

    1973 starcraft 4cyl inboard

I read it but one thing I don't have light tester and they were black then I got new ones now they smell like gas so idk what it is Wet plugs equal flooding, carb issues or weak ignition Take plugs out, dry, check gap, with plugs out crank engine to clear fuel, re-install dry plugs, try it...

    1973 starcraft 4cyl inboard

so weak spark, 3 out of 4 spark, sounds like ignition issues, which can be intermittent, just means somethings wrong or possibly failing. Just because a coil works dosn`t mean its producing the proper potential to create a strong spark, the wires could be bad, points condenser could be pooched...

    1973 starcraft 4cyl inboard

No easy answer but thing to verify/inspect/test are; -fresh gas? -compression? -spark/spark plug condition, when in doubt replace -plug wires, condition? -points and condenser condition? -coil? -timing? -Gasket leaks, intake, head, exhaust? -valve condition,(compression issues)? -ignition...

    Inspection cover leak 1984 470

"is it possible to make yourself a cork gasket for it that may do the job" Yes it is possible, I bought a role of felpro 1/8" cork/rubber and managed to make a successful gasket, careful measuring and cutting, fits perfect and only cost $6.50. Here`s what I`ve learned, the bolts for this cover...

    Inspection cover leak 1984 470

Thanks for the link, but I`m in Canada, shipping from the States if they`ll ship usually costs as much or more then the items worth. Lots of odds and ends up here, I`ll be looking for sure. Will have to make a gasket, used my spare and there seems to be none available unless I pay nearly $300...

    Inspection cover leak 1984 470

My daughter and I launched the boat for the very first time today, and ran into a snag. As mentioned in previous post I restored/rebuilt my 1984 470. While test running it on the stand, I noticed that it was weeping oil from around the lifter inspection cover under the intake manifold, so I...

470 4 barrel conversion, one cylinder missing

The cam specs for the 3.7 are similar to the 488, the big problem with a four bbl is the engines ability to deal with that extra boost of fuel. With out the engine being set up for it ie, cams lift and duration, valving etc it just wont work very well. In the end the 3.7xl is 170hp, the old...

    MerCruiser 470 MAJOR oil leak

Oil pan, front or rear crank seal or the side inspection cover. If the cover you`d see it on the engine block, there is also an oil passage brass plug on the intake side check to see if that`s missing, other than that a crack in the block some where.
