1984 470 initial carb set up to get idle

Original cam virtually no wear at all, only majors replaced was head valves springs, pistons and rings, plus the whole tear down and clean. back story; the engine as I got it only had 168 hrs on it, during that time it was over headed and took out the head gasket, and there it sat with water in...

1984 470 initial carb set up to get idle

While we were at it we traced all the other wires in the harness running forward, no issues just the purple wire, kind of strange, as I refirbed the whole harness, double checked and then checked again to make sure perfect continuity, before wrapping it with 3 rolls of good quality electrical...

1984 470 initial carb set up to get idle

Turns out the purple wire that feeds the choke and coil was only getting 4volts, trace showed a dead short somewhere between the stern and the dash. Isolated it and ran a new trace, engine fired right up, go figure, problem solved, for now...... Thanx

1984 470 initial carb set up to get idle

OK cool, got a buddy coming over tomorrow, to help with this, it`ll be the blind leading the blind.... lol We`re both motor-heads, me bikes him cars/trucks so hopefully we`ll get `er figured. Dying to get this project floating.

1984 470 initial carb set up to get idle

I was not aware of such function, being new to marine engines, and boats in general, this has been and continues to be a huge learning curve for me. I have had this engine running on the stand after the rebuild, manually manipulating the throttle, ran well considering it needs to be fully broke...

470 4 barrel conversion, one cylinder missing

Here you go from mercruiser service manual 3 sec 6(B) specifications col 1 is 470, col 2 485, col 3 488 These shows the differences in lobe lift, valve grind angles, spring heights and pressures etc.

470 4 barrel conversion, one cylinder missing

Just read manual #3, sect 6(B), engine specifications. I`m sure someone besides me has one.

1984 470 initial carb set up to get idle

To the other response, if the remote is moved out of neutral position the ignition lock-out is engaged. I can advance the throttle to pump fuel into the carb, no problem there, but she won`t crank unless fully in neutral. Even after it`s running, that would mean to advance engine rpm it would...

Motor missing on 1 cyl, is not my thread. T

1984 470 initial carb set up to get idle

Sorry should have mentioned I`ve installed a pertronix ignition, so no points. Maybe I`ll just disconnect the throttle cable for now and manually manipulate it to get it running, and once idling decently set the cable to that. The manual only states the engine should start cold in neutral with...

470 4 barrel conversion, one cylinder missing

"You've been misinformed. The ONLY difference between a 470 and the 485 and 488 is the exhaust manifold and the carb. Everything else (head, valves, valve springs, camshaft, pistons, crankshaft, rods, flywheel, electrical system), all the same. Just go to any of the websites that list parts and...

1984 470 initial carb set up to get idle

The engine is now in the boat, need to know how open the throttles need to be open to achieve an idle, can`t find that info anywhere. Was cranking it the other day, it would fire than quit. I`ll assume the timing needs to be closer, I can do that with the timing light while cranking. Carb is the...

470 4 barrel conversion, one cylinder missing

From what I learned while rebuilding my 1984 470, and from a local 470 guru, he advised me against doing the 4 hole conversion. The high hp 470`s, 485 and 488 ran 4bbls, also had different head set up, ie push rods stronger springs and a lumpier cam, all to get 15-20 more pony`s and eat way...

Parts arrived this morning, and I got busy, two new driven shaft seals and shaft inspection all good, disassembled drive shaft innards, new seal and O-ring, cleaned and inspected, all good. Next up I will pressure test the assembled units and hopefully will be good to go. The task was a lot...

I`ve got it tore down, going to replace all the seals, might as well now that I`m knee deep into it. Ordered all the parts hopefully be here by end of week or early next week. Seems the closer I get to launch day..................

Ya that`s what I figured, Better get at it then or I`ll never get this tub launched. That`s what I meant by the seal being the wrong way around. I just couldn`t find info as to whether it was a wet or dry space. Thanx

Good day all, joined up the other day hoping to get a little help, and I did, thanx to those who replied. The help was figuring out how to correct the shifting issue on my Alpha1 gen1. (serial#6683465) 1984....maybe Shortly after sorting that out and confirming it was good to go I refilled the...

    Another shifting issue

Got at it this morning, dropped the LU down enough to get at stuff, followed the instructions to the letter, readjusted the cabling, every thing in spec and viola, I now have a properly functioning stern drive. I had the gears locked in reverse that`s why it didn`t work. Now to get this thing in...
