it ran before it had a knocking problem, which was apparently caused by the exhaust ports being plugged with carbon. all the ignition components are new, set, and produce a strong spark. The carburetor is from an 18hp and was rebuilt last Fall. Had to swap carbs because the original was set up for the onboard tank, which is not in useable condition. It pumps water like a champ, but that's all it does well. i just have no more answers for it.

Great job on the video.
It looks like the problem is it will not take any throttle.
Carb is the problem, run it without the engine hood and try chocking it when you apply throttle, if it picks up rpm you need to get back into the carb.

There may be a carb issue, but at about 2:28 of your vid you can hear one cylinder cutting in and out. Check over your ignition again. I don't know about the suitability of the 18hp carb for this motor, maybe it will be fine, but you won't know 'til you get 'er firing on both jugs.

it would really help to know year or model #.

i do assume you have atleast 60PSI compression, on both cylinders, and they are within 10 psi.

sounds as if you have some carb adjustment problems,

also if you used the coil kits, that you have to put the boot on the end. strip back about 3/4 inches of insulation and wrap it in the spring connector. also make sure the center of the wire hit the pin in the coil connector.

also sounds like you need to link n sinc your timing.

It appears to me its on one cylinder pretty much most of the time.
probably ignition.be sure points are clean and adj. to .020 on the highest point of the cam.Flywheel nut torqued to 480-540 inch lbs.bore and taper clean and dry.
Plug wires in good shape no rubbed thin/cracked spots.Be sure the coils are lined up with the bosses on the stator plate.
Also I think I detected a lean sneeze; carb issue.Repeatedly having to choke
is a clue.I would think the venturi on the 18 carb may be a little big.
Get her running on both cylinders and you may be able to adjust the carb enough to get it to run.

Moderators to this point Gale,Bucaneer,Sea King have allways been in "other outboards."

both cylinders have 70 psi compression. model is 12S12 or 13B. first i wll crank it with my power drill and check the spark. Then pull the flywheel off and inspect the coils with relation to the mounting bosses. I'm thinking maybe i did something wrong rebluiding the intake manifold. I copied the gaskets from an 18hp but the crankshaft-facing gasket appeared to be different in the parts diagram. i will also reinstall the original carb and hook it directly to a tank that will be overhanging. The needle and seat cannot handle the pressure of the pump system

I think a carb from a 1956 OMC 15hp would be more suitable for this motor, since it is closer to that model than an 18.

You might also check and make sure your fuel pump is working good.

Re: 12hp Buccaneer runs like crap after rebuild

who cares?? it's OMC, sharing many of the same parts

Yes; but if its considered an "other outboard" it may get more responses in that section.
Also anyone looking in "other outboards" for a thread to help them will miss this one
and some of the details the Gale gurus could supply.
Also the early Gales while a related family are indeed truly an "other outboard" so someone who thinks he has a Gale based motor isn't likely to look under E/J.
