13 ft water boat to ???

I bought a 33hp johnson seahorse motor that wasn?t working, I fixed it and sold it for a small profit, but the thing is with the motor came a 13 ft water boat.,I thought to myself I could just paint it and use it for sea rod fishing. When I started working on it I found out it was basically junk. But I decided to build me a bigger and better boat for the fun of it, using the old boat as a foundation.

I repair boats for a living, (motors, pumps, electrical repairs, iron work and more). I have seen boats been built, repaired and changed as I work on engines. It is a lot of work but I think that having something you made by yourself makes it special.
I have cars I have rebuilt, a motorcycle, and some musical instruments that I made and now it?s time for a boat.
I have never worked with fiber glass but I have seen a lot of stuff here on this forum that I think can help me get things done. I also have some fiberglass specialists that I can call or visit if I hit a wall.
but well this is where I am at.....

Re: 13 ft water boat to ???

there where probably 30 drill holes in the transom so the wood was wet. The air chambers where full of water, so I took all the urethane foam out as it was soaking wet.
So I?m building a new transom and cutting the air chambers away, I?m going to build bigger ones laiter.

The theme I?m going for is Naglfar, you can read about it here....

so it?s gonna be dark

I think that is a cool little boat. I'd love to run across a little boat like that to just go cruise around in.

This is the part of the transom I cut off

I waxed an aluminum plate I had lying around and screwed it in place.

I used a really thin chopped strands mat for the first 2 layers, and 2 layers of 600 gr (2.0 oz) on top af that.

I just pulled off the alluminum plate and it looked OK

I still have a lot of grinding to do in the boat, my big grinder went out in smoke so I wanted to use the time so I started glassing.

I shot this video while I was cutting out the air chambers, the wood in the transom was even worse.

I was gonna get a lot grinding done today since I got the grinder back from repair, but then my friend called me and told me about a fishing shop that was closing down 50 - 70% off everything, so I went there and bought lots and lots of gear, 2 new rods, reel and a lot more, but I got a lot of work done in the boat today, finished cutting the rest of the air chamber, and also the bulkheads ( transverse frames). I?m hoping I'll finish grinding down most of the hull this weekend.

I was wondering how far I should go with this project..... I think a hull extension is a must. I was thinking of lengthen it about 4 feet. But I have to check with my specialists if they think it?s wise, or if it?s to long.

Any thoughts?????

I think it's a 13' +/- boat that will look disproportionately narrow if you lengthen it 4'.

And be prone to handling poorly, esp under power & turning.

Re: 13 ft water boat to ???

that was my thoughts as well, it?s only just over 5 ft wide.
I think widening it would be to much work. But I?m in no hurry to get this thing done, so it is still a possibility if it?s not to much problem. As I see it when I?m done grinding it down it will be little more than a gel code :). So all strength will be added later.
So all changes to it will no be a problem, I?m basically building a new boat.......

I?m gonna try to find time to go and see the specialists next week and see what have to they say.

Talked to the fiber glass specialist today and he told me that it would be ok to make it 3 ft longer as long as I cut it at it?s widest point, but he also told me a lot of tricks to save time and money. So it?s on................

Gonna go to the garage and do some grinding:)

We have our own infamous boat stretch thread here with a fantabulous creation made by Oops. Its a good read thread for everything you are doing.

I like that windshield are you planning to stretch the cap and put it back on as well or making it more of a center console boat. That windshield looks almost perfect for a new project I have.

Re: 13 ft water boat to ???

Hi Chris.
I will use the windshield, I think it looks good. But it?s from a bigger boat so there is not enough room to go fishing as it was. I have read all the posts on Oops project, that?s what got me started doing this one :)
Since I?m only gonna use this boat for fishing at sea, I will move the steering wheel and other controls near the bow to have more room on deck. I?m also gonna make the hull (gunwale) a little higher and change bow.

I have some drawings of how it?s gonna look when I?m done, so I have some idea where I?m going with this project.

I haven?t done anything for a while since I?we been so busy at work, but I will be starting again in the next 3 weeks or so. The only thing I have done the last month was to go and buy the resin:)

bought the material for the gunwale today, I can?t wait to get started again.
I have just been to busy at work to do anything in the boat since the other boss and the owner are taking their summer vacation. So I?m answering 4 phone numbers and it?s really busy.....

Re: 13 ft water boat to ???

been working on my project, most of the paint is off and most of the cracked fiberglass has been grinded away. I have cut the hull at its widest point and I have mocked up the lenght of the boat. I think I will be going for 15 1/2 - 16 ft.
I got chopped strands mat that I bought cheap from a friend since he sold his project before he got started laying any fiberglass, so it looks like this is going to be cheaper than I though. I even bought the paint for is last week since it was on sale, cant wait to get started laying the fiber glass. :)

I have some concerns about the keel, the thing is there is cement in it.

I know why it?s there, but the thing is DO I HAVE TO GRIND IT OUT BEFORE I START GLASSING OR CAN I GLASS OVER IT ?

ANY THOUGHTS ???

Re: 13 ft water boat to ???

How much ballast do you think that smallish keel filled w/ concrete will provide?

Do you know who built this boat originally? Is concrete keel ballast common on your side of the big pond? Seems an odd choice, very odd. And offer little weight, but it couldn't be lower in the hull, so maybe it lowers the center of buoyancy enough to accomplish the goal.....

I don?t know the manufacturer, but concrete keel ballasts were common all over the world few decades a go and are still used cause it?s cheap. this is only an 14 ft boat so any weight put under the waterline would give you ballast that would effect the buoyancy of the boat.
