Will my 1979 15904e 15 hp drive shaft work with a late 80's model lower unit? Does the drive shaft drop into the pinion? It looks like the same pinion was used into the 90's. Thanks.

Does the Drive shaft drop into the pinion? I'm wondering if the splines on the bottom of the drive shaft would be the same? Thanks.

Supposedly all lower units are the same from 74-93.

Re: 15 hp Evinrude drive shaft question

I have interchanged a goodly number in my time & the only difference I have found is that some have a groove cut in the upper end of the driveshaft that fits into the crankshaft. This was there to accomodate an O-Ring which was supposedly to keep water from getting up into the upper splines & rusting. But why would water get there because it is way above water line? Anyway if the splines are liberally greased upon reassembly, that does the same thing.

Both splines are the same from 1974 to 1992, & I suspect even the 93 on, but I forgot to check (or can't remember) on the 94 when I rebuilt it.
