I just saw an ad for a 96 175 hp mec mariner 2 stroke. model number is S# 0D232860
and they only want $1800 for it.
1st question: is this a good price?
2nd question: do you think it is too much for a 16 ft v hull runabout?
It is a 1979 thompson, and it has a 70 hp on it right now. I can't find the uscg info plate on it.
if nothing else, i may be able to sell this motor for more

Re: 175 hp on a 16 ft runabout?

It is likely above he max HP allowed on that boat, and may make the boat unsafe. Your 70HP is 3 or 4 cylinders, that 175 is a V6.

The price is in the ballpark, but you need to verify it's condition. Resale is whatever the market will bear. I would buy the proper motor(~100HP), and skip this one. Reselling is not worth the hassle to me.

that sounds like a good price but that motor is wy to big for your boat. the weight alone will flood the back easily

I agree,That 16 footer is probably rated no more than 100 to 115 hp.
175 would be a disaster waiting to happen if it did not sink at the first launch from the weight.

Re: 175 hp on a 16 ft runabout?

My 14 1/23 runabout (albeit older) was rated at 50HP. My current 17' deck boat is 135HP. Gary is right in the 100-115HP range I think.

Might find that motor (and the attached transom) at the bottom in the near future running them together.

Re: 175 hp on a 16 ft runabout?

yea, i think your guys are about right.
i have see some pretty big engines on some bass boats before.
i'm pretty sure i have seen engines in the range of 150 - 180 hp on 16- 19 ft bass boats before, idk if they can take more weight than a runabout.
i know my transom is a lot taller than a bass boat.

Bass boats are made to handle the horse power and weight They are counterballenced in the front and normally have a wide beam (width). Also even though they look small they probably are a alot longer than you think . Most of the ones on the bass shows are 21ft now
I would not put a 175 on anything under 18ft unless its had a data plate on the transom that said it was ok, Since you do not have one

90 hp to 115 at the most I would think could go on that and you should probably invesitigate beefing up the transom if you go with a v4. 1979
was quite a while ago.

Just sit on it!

Just sit on it!

I don?t know a lot about outboards but a 70hp weighs about 375 pounds and a 175hp weighs about 510 pounds. That is 135 additional pounds for the 175 over the 70. Sit on top of your outboard and if the boat doesn?t sink then it will not sink if you bolt on the 175. The power might rip her apart but it will be a heck of a ride until it does. I had a 14? with a 140 and it did just fine with up to five people on board.

Re: 175 hp on a 16 ft runabout?

V6 motors are cheap right now, the hot sellers are the two and three cylinder motors. No one wants anything that might guzzle gas.
I picked up a minty 1999 Merc 200hp two weeks ago for under $500. The guy sold it after buying a smaller boat and realizing that his 23' boat had no market value. I'm not sure what I'll use it on but the price was right.
I don't think I'd be likely to hang a V6 on a 16' boat, it would seem like a waste to me. There's no way you would ever get all the potential out of it on a boat that short.

if i were you do what deoncarpenter said about standing on the transom if the water line is ok then your fine.when putting that v6 on i would beef up the transom a bit more and tie the transom to the stringers using stainless steal bars or steal bars.thats what i did on my 16' cigarette.

Re: 175 hp on a 16 ft runabout?

I have the max HP on my outfit at 140 HP and 360lb. It goes like a bat out of heck. I think a 6 cylinder 175 would be somewhat over much !!!
My 2 cents.

Re: 175 hp on a 16 ft runabout?

My 18' bass boat has the max rated 150 hp motor on it. It can be a hand full to handle, and this high performance hull with swivel seats is a heckova lot more boat than a 16' runabout.

If you talk yourself into it, be sure you're well insured and really want to die.

I've found that when someone asks for advice and then argues against it, they've already made up their mind.
