Re: 1957 Evinrude Big Twin 35 impeller replacement help!!!
Get a new impeller - don't even bother messing around with the old one. The impeller fits very tight in the housing. The driveshaft spins clockwise when viewed from above ,so the ends of the fins should trail counterclockwise. However, when you're putting the impeller into the housing, you are actually looking at it from underneath, so the ends of the fins should trail clockwise. Sort of hard to picture. But even if you get them wrong, they will right themselves once the impeller starts turning at high rpms. Make sure the keyway in the impeller fits over the pin/key on the driveshaft.
ok i finally figured it out. i removed the impeller and housing. it was a little dirty and it was stuck in debrit. it was serprisingly clean and no damage is visible. the second rubber seal for the water tube outlet was still good too. i took some pics. does the impeller fit tight int the small hole in the housing? and should it spin clockwise or counterclockwise? should the fins spin like a fan as in the way the fins bend? do u think i can still use these parts? i will post pics soon.
