well the clutch dog and foward gear are bad. the shine on them are very convincing

so well my gear oil is milky and well its time for the seals to be changed

i have never done this before and needs some step by step instructions would be helpeful:)

so far i know i need an oil seal puller it has a hook like end. 5-10 bucks from harbor freight. good investment since my 10hp needs some new seals soon too. then i hear i need a long 5/16 punch to get the shift rod seal out? and oil seal puller for the driveshaft and prop seal. is this it?

how hard to be done:confused::( i dont wanna screw this up since i hear that any damage to gear case is possible since its cast alumium and it wont bend but crack.

pictures? thanks guys really helpful with everything

Seal puller with the hook end is used for the driveshaft seal (under the water pump housing). Yes, the long 5/16" tapered punch is used to remove the brass bushing which holds the shift rod o-ring in place. Tap that bushing out from the top. It comes out easily with the proper tool. I use the proper sized socket wrench head with a long extension to tap the new one in place from the bottom. The prop shaft seal housing should have a couple small holes at 180 degrees to tap out the seal. Use a small punch and alternate from one side to the other until the seal pops out. Don't forget to replace the seals on the oil drain and vent hole bolts, and the small o-ring on the shift rod pivot (dreaded Phillips head bolt.) And the spaghetti seal on the skeg. I also put a thin coat of permatex form-a-gasket on the surface where the skeg contacts the gearcase housing.

I could be wrong but if memory serves me the forward and reverse gears on your engine are identical. What this means is that you can reverse them and turn the clutch dog around and have new engagement surfaces for the gears and clutch dog since they will then be engaging the opposite side. This, of course, assumes they haven't already been swapped. It's sure worth a look to save the price of a gear set. Good luck!:)

Switching the gears and clutch dog around will not give you a new engagement surface, but if the reverse gear and that side of the clutch dog are less worn than forward, it could buy you some time.

no! the foward and reverse gears are not the same. i repeat not the same! totally different part numbers

if you ever taken apart an gear case you will notice first of the bushing are way different. foward has a solid bushing while the reverse doesnt. reverse you can remove and spin around and such. will likely burn up them if switched.

unsure on clutch dog.

nah ill just go ahead replace it peace of mind.''

after this its time for me to finally tackle my 1959 10hp

i totally agree with replacement, peace of mind.

question what is "a air" "i wakeboarded before behind a air but i couldnt stay up. cables i stay up ok and turn working on it?"

i have been sking single and double since 13, we use to use a surf board for a wakeboard. ever try just a 40 in diameter piece of plywood (disc) no boots.

Yes, bushings are different - you have to switch them.

Correct - rides between the gear and the prop shaft and is made of brass.
