Boy, That picture brings back Non-Fond memories. I'm soooooo glad those days are behind me. I do not envy what you are about to undertake. What will you be using to fill all the gouges etc? I used 3M Premium Marine Filler but I think if I had to do it again, I'd make my own with resin and micro ballons. I think I remember where you used that too, is that correct??

The 3-m Stuff is nice- I've used it in the past. For the most part, I use thickened epoxy fillers, since I have the epoxy anyway. The deeper gouges will get a structural filler, then a surfacing filler, the thin surface imperfections will get microballoons or a 'fairing' filler.

One nice thing about using the epoxy fillers is that they have a LONG working time- 20-30 minutes depending on the hardener I use, so I get plenty of time to work it how I want. Of course, this is a double edged sword- The long working time also means I have to wait longer to sand it, which is why it comes in handy to have multiple projects going at once. I got some fairing and filling done on the dash panel today, and while that cured, I started the bottom.

Wow, I have struggled to find time to work on my 1 project, and your hauling great big dumpster loads of donkeys (a&&) on more then 1. And the G-3 isn't even yours......

Have you solved the space time continuum? Cloned yourself or is it a 'special' Breaking Bad brew?

Ok, enough sniveling. Sorry, :D.. Great big ole crane, that's probably extremely handy. Thanks for the pedestal idea for flipping too, that will have to do it for me! No room for a rolling gantry....... Wish I had it when I took the 650 Merc out of a car trunk solo tonight, & put it on the 60 FireFlite transom solo, no extra stand yet. That was the worst thing I've done in months. Hope to have some smallish wheelbarrow loads of donkeys done on it by the new year.....

Yeah, the crane comes in handy for stuff like that! I use my engine hoist, too- But it doesn't have nearly the vertical 'reach'... I can JUST barely get a motor off my boat when It's on the trailer. I've manhandled enough motors to know when I need help- I can just handle the 35's myself, but use a hoist or lift with anything any larger- It's easier on the back, and you don't risk dropping the whole thing...

That 650 must have been a chore to move- It's about the same weight as my 850- And I wouldn't have tried to lift that bad boy without a hoist! You can see the repower on my other thread- http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=355668&page=9 It's about 1/2 way down the page. You're going to like that motor.

BACK AT IT!!

We Layed up the ship in Sturgeon Bay, WI this weekend, and I'm back ashore. I am GLAD to get winter sailing behind me- Being 'at sea' this time of year is not fun...

I have been working on the Lake N Sea, and I have the hull ALMOST sanded down now-

0119Sanded.jpg

This poor girl has had a rough life, though someone did care about her once. The hull had been painted at some time in the past, when I sanded this layer off, the underlying gelcoat was terribly scratched and gouged. It appears that a previous owner was LOUSY at trailering :)

The gelcoat had to be completely removed in places, other places it was in pretty good shape and I could get away with just sanding it down. I used 3-M removal pads on my grinder for most of it, then 60 grit on my random orbit sander... I'll hit it with 120 before I prime.

It's a good thing that it was a nice day and I could do this outside- This is MESSY work!

Andrew you are one multi-tasking dude ! I have,nt clicked on to this thread until today . I,m glad I did! The first thing that came into my head when I saw the boat was nananananananana BATMAN!:D It,s amazing everything you can do completely by yourself and take the pics to. The one pic of the boat flip looked like it was just floating in air. You sure you standing back there with some magic wand!
Gunna keep watching this one for sure...

Andrew are you going to add both 35's on the back or just a single? The twins are why I grabbed the Lone Star I am working on and I bet twins would really be yet anther cool look on yours. Not like it isn't cool already, I am really liking the lines on the hull too.

Just one at a time! There isn't room for two motors, and she's only rated for 40 HP.

I figure if I've got TWO vintage motors there is a good chance that one will be running at any given time ;)

Glad your Winter Voyage went well. The L n' S is coming along nicely. Are you going to use the SuperMarine paint on her as well?

Yes, But I'm not sure which of their paints I am planning to use. I might try the two-part urethane- The techies there have been trying to get me to try it out. I do know that I'm going to be using their epoxy primer.

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

The sanding is more or less DONE- At least the 'removal' stage is. It's time to bring her up from the "dungeon" to the upstairs garage/workshop. My wheeled work stand comes in handy-

0206Outside.jpg

With those nice big "Turf" tires, I can wheel her out of the garage, over the grass to the driveway, up to the street, then down my other driveway to the main floor garage-

0208Garage.jpg

I use a trailer dolly under the front, so I can steer it. Being able to move the hull around like this, and even just when it's in the shop, makes life a LOT easier. I've got the deck on a similar stand as well.

Next comes filling the various gouges and cracks- Followed by, of course, MORE sanding, then a good coat of epoxy primer.... Then more filling (I'm sure I'll miss a spot or two that I'll catch once it's all primed!), then MORE sanding.....

0209Filled.jpg

The deeper ones are, I think, a result of trailering incidents, probably at the launch ramp... I reinforced them from the inside when the floor was out, and now filled them from the outside. Once it's all sanded and faired, You'll never even know it happened.

I did a little work on the seats & dash as well. When I'm mixing up a batch of filler, I try to have a few other 'side' projects handy in case there is any leftover, to minimize the waste.
I like being able to pull the boat out like this on nice days, It's MUCH more pleasant to work outside!
