Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration
Thanks! She's coming along nicely. Having the whole boat one color DOES highlight all the flaws nicely... There are some 'ripples' in the sides of the hull, that I couldn't even feel- But you can see them when it's all white... I'm going to fair them down as nicely as possible, but not going to go overboard. There were a lot of little pinholes, but I knew that those would show up. I have to say that this was the WORST gel-Coat I've ever dealt with- When I started sanding the top layer, the gel underneath looked like a sponge it had so many bubbles and voids in it. I removed most of it, but there are still some spots here and there. The primer is filling them nicely, but it'll take a bit of work.
The primer I am using is Supermarine etching primer. It's what I used on the Glasspar- And I really like working with it. It is VERY heavy in solids, which really helps to hide flaws. It dries quickly (30 minutes or so), and sands BEAUTIFULLY. The etching nature of it really helps to 'bite' into the surface below. The tech guys at the company INSIST that this primer be used on fiberglass because of the strength of the bond.
What size tip did you use? When I sprayed high build I used a 1.8 mm and it worked fine.
I used a LVLP sprayer with a 1.4mm tip. With that gun, there is no real selection of tip sizes. I used it because I've used it in the past to shoot some pretty thick enamels, but this primer is WAY thicker. A bigger tip would have probably helped a lot. I am considering upgrading my spray equipment before I shoot the color- I used a HVLP turbine gun (cheap setup) on the Glasspar, but now that I have a 'real' compressor, I think I might step up the game a bit. I've got a HVLP gun from Harbor Freight that I might play with, too- Just to see if it works out before I spend the big $$$ on a spray gun!
As for the pink, I think I've got it picked out... Just need to get the courage to order it! Think pink cadillac, not pepto!
