Waiting on weather now... I should be priming this week. Most of the filling and fairing is now done, I'm just waiting for the weather to cooperate!

It is a beautiful day here- Perfect painting weather! Its just warm enough to prime in the morning, and has been getting nice and warm by the afternoon, and the humidity isn't too bad, either. I got the first coat of primer on the hull & deck-

It is starting to look more like a boat and less like a project.

I sprayed this primer- It is a high build primer, and gave me some trouble spraying, I think if I had it to do again I'd just use a foam roller! The next coat will probably get rolled... My equipment clogs too easily with a paint this heavy, and I didn't want to thin it too much.

I didn't spray them in the front yard- I sprayed in the garage, then pulled them out. This stuff dries FAST (less than 1/2 hour!) So, I had to keep going... Since it dries fast, I didn't have to worry about bugs and dirt getting in to it out there.

Having it all one uniform color like this really helps to find all the flaws... Looks like I'll be doing some sanding :)

It wont be long before I'm squirting color- I better decide on a shade of pink.

What size tip did you use? When I sprayed high build I used a 1.8 mm and it worked fine.

That is looking AWESOME, Andrew...

That filling primer is the cat's meow when it comes to getting the surface just right...best thing about it is it is extremely forgiving when sanding time rolls around...it cuts fast and really gives a nice surface to paint on...

Great job...can't wait to see it blossom in pink...gonna be sweet!

Man, it always kind of looked like an 'old school' runabout George Jetson would own, and I liked it. But now, wow, I really like it, good looking! Post paint it will only get better!

Great work on getting it ready for color!

I'm still pushing for some pearl-escence in clear over the mid-tone Salmon!:D

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

Thanks! She's coming along nicely. Having the whole boat one color DOES highlight all the flaws nicely... There are some 'ripples' in the sides of the hull, that I couldn't even feel- But you can see them when it's all white... I'm going to fair them down as nicely as possible, but not going to go overboard. There were a lot of little pinholes, but I knew that those would show up. I have to say that this was the WORST gel-Coat I've ever dealt with- When I started sanding the top layer, the gel underneath looked like a sponge it had so many bubbles and voids in it. I removed most of it, but there are still some spots here and there. The primer is filling them nicely, but it'll take a bit of work.

The primer I am using is Supermarine etching primer. It's what I used on the Glasspar- And I really like working with it. It is VERY heavy in solids, which really helps to hide flaws. It dries quickly (30 minutes or so), and sands BEAUTIFULLY. The etching nature of it really helps to 'bite' into the surface below. The tech guys at the company INSIST that this primer be used on fiberglass because of the strength of the bond.

What size tip did you use? When I sprayed high build I used a 1.8 mm and it worked fine.

I used a LVLP sprayer with a 1.4mm tip. With that gun, there is no real selection of tip sizes. I used it because I've used it in the past to shoot some pretty thick enamels, but this primer is WAY thicker. A bigger tip would have probably helped a lot. I am considering upgrading my spray equipment before I shoot the color- I used a HVLP turbine gun (cheap setup) on the Glasspar, but now that I have a 'real' compressor, I think I might step up the game a bit. I've got a HVLP gun from Harbor Freight that I might play with, too- Just to see if it works out before I spend the big $$$ on a spray gun!

As for the pink, I think I've got it picked out... Just need to get the courage to order it! Think pink cadillac, not pepto!

Looking good up there on Hixson Pike!

Yup... I'm only about 2 miles from 'the pike', I drive on it every day. I have to to get anywhere!! You must know the area- I'm up on Gold Point by Chester Frost park...

I've actually been considering that one... The three gun set is nice, But I think it's overkill for me- I think that 1.8mm gun would work fine. Did you shoot your topside paint it, too? I'm using the single stage urethane, and I'm thinking it'll be a similar viscosity. They sell other size tips, too... So I could adjust.

I wonder how they compare in quality to the 'Harbor Fright' ones...

I have both and the TCP guns are a similar but IMHO better. AND you can buy the interchangeable tips. I have a 2.5 1.8 and 1.3 tip. I used the 1.8 for the Hull (EasyPoxy) and the 1.3 mm on the topside (Valspar thinned 15%) The 1.8 worked great once I learned not to thin the paint.

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

Well, You convinced me. I ordered the 3 gun set... I probably don't need all three, but once you start adding up the parts, it's not much more to buy all three than to buy one gun and all the tips separately.

I've got a truck to paint next- Hopefully this'll work well. If not, it's all your fault!

This has been an EXPENSIVE week for tools- I got my new TIG welder, electric metal shears, and now this. Luckily I just got my winter sailing bonus :)

Re: 1959 Lake N' Sea Restoration

Andrew,

I have been looking forward to your paint job. You seem to be the only reference I have to the Supermarine paint, so I am going to probe a little here on the details if you don't mind.

1) I presume you are using the SM-664D primer? Edit: sorry it appears you already answered this in the affirmative.
2) You said single stage urethane, so I assume you will be using the SM-1000 again?
3) Did you consider the SM-266 two part urethane for this project? If so, what factors helped you decide on the SM-1000?

Thanks

Very nice project. A real piece of art in my opinion.

I am using the 266 on this- it is a single stage two part urethane. I opted to use this over the sm1000 on this project because after discussing it with the people who make it, I decided it would be worth the little extra effort and money to use a urethane, which is going to have more gloss and greater resistance to damage. I was perfectly happy with the sm1000, though , and would not hesitate to use it again!

The primer is good stuff, too. The application issues that I am having ate a result of my equipment, not the paint.

Can't wait to get some color on this girl... I've got the white for the hull, but haven't ordered the pink yet, I'll probably get that done next week.

On a side note, I liked the super marine paints so much I plan to use their automotive paints on my 66 ford f100 restoration, which I am just starting now.

My wife's brother lived out your way so he could get his boat in the water quickly and my sister still lives in Red Bank. I really enjoy your approach to the projects. The information exchange is just outstanding. Keep up the great work!

Thanks! This is a great area for boating... It takesme longer to hook the trailer up than it does to get to the launch ramp- its about two miles from me!

I second this statement. Your commentary is well written, detailed, informative, and to the point. It is apparent that your perspective is from true personal experience.

And... thanks for the feedback on the paint. I will more than likely use the same system with the exception that I will roll & tip.
