I just bought this --

This is a 1959 Whitehouse on the registration but the HIN number begins with CFZ (California Homebuilt). I found this boat up at Eagle Lake, Ca. which is 300 miles from my front door. I haven't figured out how I'm going to get it home yet.

They even put the 1950's fins on her...albeit a bit less than the cars had. Love the color scheme and the curves!

Nice... Whitehouse is a good 'guess'- Titles and registrations are often wrong, but it looks a lot like one of these-

The California homebuilt tag was stuck on there sometime later- The modern HIN system didn't appear until the 70's, and some states want to see a HIN on a boat in order to register it. It really has no meaning as far as when/where the boat was built.

The fins give it a cool look- It should be a fun restoration!

Re: 1959 Whitehouse

I just checked USCG and it appears that Whitehouse never established a HIN. They might have been gone by the time HIN's became mandatory so that would explain the Californina Homebuilt CFZ. That might have happened when the boat was registered in Nevada. My guess is that it needed the HIN before they could get it registered. I wonder what the original registration said, guess I'll never know.

I can't wait to show you the transom on this thing. When I first looked at it I thought wow, this thing it shot but when I got to looking at it I realized it was steam molded plywood and then glassed. It's curved outward and I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be that way, LOL... I'm going over tomorrow after I get off the lake and see what I'm in for as far as getting this thing back home. Snow is just a matter of days away so getting it out of here now is probably not going to happen. I have a storage space and I can either leave my Jetcraft here and not use it this winter or leave a 100.00 boat in 150.00 a month storage space for five or six months. Or.... I could just do like the other guy did and throw a tarp over it and let it sit where it is. Guess which way I'm leaning... Ha..

Cool boat. We did have another project here before with a curved transom. I think it was a Glaspar or something similar.

Re: 1959 Whitehouse

Last day of fishing, heading back to the flat lands in the morning. I made some phone calls about the trailer that the boat is on and came to the conclusion that buying another trailer that has registration will be eaiser than trying to make this one road worthy and register it. The boat is no problem, I have the title to it.

What I think I know and what actually comes to light at the end of the day may be two completely different things. For now we're going to call it a Whitehouse Dolphin. There appears have been a couple of different models of the Dolphin so narrowing that down will be challenging. It also appears that these were only made from 1958 to 1961. That makes it pretty rare in my books. Fixing the glass is not going to be the hard part, finding any missing parts is going to be next to impossible.

You'd be amazed what you can find out there if you really look. I found ALL the parts I needed for my Lake N Sea- It took some patience, but I did it. There are parts out there for even the RAREST boats. You just have to look!

With luck, there won't be too much missing!!

Re: 1959 Whitehouse

Thanks Andrew, I've started my search already but I have to be careful not to get to anxious. I need to get the boat home and find out exactly what I have first. Mid May next year seems like it's going the be the first opportunity. The original motor was a Merc Mark 78, I'll probably see if I can find one this winter and get it done first.

Re: 1959 Whitehouse

Hello,
I just wanted to pop in and say good luck with the new boat. It is very cool. I really have become addicted to the old 50?s stuff. I am restoring a ?finned? boat myself. I have a 58 Reinel deep v that I am using for parts and a 59 catamaran that I am restoring. I have the same bullet style cleats that you do on the front of your boat on my parts boat that I am going to switch over to my project. I think they are just about the coolest fittings I have seen yet.
Nice to meet you and I will be watching your thread also.
Dave
P.S. I am just down the road from you in Fresno. (Considering we talk to people in Canada daily) Fresno ain?t that far.
