New to this group.....Lots of good advice out here! I'm mechanically inclined, but outboards are a new thing for me... I recently inherited a 1960 Johnson 10 hp. "SeaHorse". Model number is QD23, I think. (going on memory, there) I took the carb apart, and cleaned it, it looked to be in really good shape, considering it's age. Only thing I found was that the old cork float had seen better days. It appears as though it originally was coated with something to keep it from soaking up fuel, but the coating is pretty deteriorated. It still floats, though. Anyone know if I can re-coat it? What should I coat it with? Last question (I promise), What should the float setting be? Right now, it's not level with the carb body. With the carb upside down, and the float sitting on the needle vale, it aims downward, which makes for a higher float setting when the carb is turned upright. Should I re-set it back to level? P.S. engine starts good, but runs a little erratically, varying from a "lean cough" to a "four stroke sputter" at all rpm's...I still need to check my fuel line out carefully, maybe I'm sucking air, there...... All replies will be very sincerely appreciated
