New to this group.....Lots of good advice out here! I'm mechanically inclined, but outboards are a new thing for me... I recently inherited a 1960 Johnson 10 hp. "SeaHorse". Model number is QD23, I think. (going on memory, there) I took the carb apart, and cleaned it, it looked to be in really good shape, considering it's age. Only thing I found was that the old cork float had seen better days. It appears as though it originally was coated with something to keep it from soaking up fuel, but the coating is pretty deteriorated. It still floats, though. Anyone know if I can re-coat it? What should I coat it with? Last question (I promise), What should the float setting be? Right now, it's not level with the carb body. With the carb upside down, and the float sitting on the needle vale, it aims downward, which makes for a higher float setting when the carb is turned upright. Should I re-set it back to level? P.S. engine starts good, but runs a little erratically, varying from a "lean cough" to a "four stroke sputter" at all rpm's...I still need to check my fuel line out carefully, maybe I'm sucking air, there...... All replies will be very sincerely appreciated:)

Carb kit's are cheap, and a new float with needle, and seat is included. Don't try to salvage that old float. The float should be level when the carb is upside down.

Thanks for the replies! I'll look for a kit...maybe try a coat of polyurethane as per your post...not sure how it'll stand up to gasoline...think the erratic running could be caused by wrong float setting? (still haven't checked the fuel line from the tank..it's cooollddd out right now..)

The float setting is even with the rim where the bowl gasket goes when you turn it upside-down.<br />Carb kit 439071 from your local johnny/rude dealer should come with the float. The aftermarket ones (18- numbers) don't for 60s outboards.

I wouldn't use paint, too much chance of it lifting. epoxy is the only thing I would trust to hold up to gas on the old cork floats. dry it out good and smear a light coat of JB-weld on it and it will last forever.

Re: 1960 10hp carb float questions

Paul Moir was right, the carb kit WAS cheap, (unlike the sediment bowl!) and in stock at my local boat store! Having the part number was a great big help! Now, when the weather gets above freezing, I'll fire it up and see how it runs...Thanx once again for sharing your knowledge...Hope I can repay the favor someday.
