Just inherited this outboard, what is fuel mixture ? Thanks...

Fuel mixture is simply adding 2-cycle oil to gas in a proper ratio.
The "usual" ratio is 50:1.
That equals 50 parts of gas/fuel to 1 part oil.
2.6 ounces of oil to 1 gallon of gas.


IMPORTANT: read the mixing directions on the oil container as some may vary.

NEGATIVE! For that engine it's 24:1 ratio. That's a quart of TCW3 oil to 6 gallons of 87 octain regular unleaded gas.

Oh, oh... Maybe I better get another opinion regarding my recent acquisition of a '78 6.5hp Evinrude?

My local marina mechanic said all the older and small HP Johnson and Evirudes run with 50:1.

24:1 was the ratio for SAE 30 weight oils of the day. Evenrude still recomends 24:1 however, if they recomend anything else and it blew up, they might get sued. Now I run 50:1 on all my old engines, with TCW3's, been doing that for over 20 years, with no problems. I also will not say to use 50:1, that way you can't sue me...
As for the fuel, 89 octane, will make sure you won't melt a piston due to preignitions. It more important to make sure you mix the fuel correctly, (don't guess there are cheap measuring kits for pre mixing)as that will make for a better overall experence. Less smoke, less carbon build up, etc etc. In Canada, or the UK or Australia, thats 1 quart to FIVE gallons, since we use imperial, or 1 litre to 25 liters.

The '78 Evinrude gets a 50:1 mix, as do all OMC and BRP outboards made in 1964 and later.

Mid-grade or premium fuel offer zero advantage in most 2 stroke outboards, and the additives in some premiums may reduce the life expectancy.

These are low compression motors are can not benefit from high octane fuel. As JB mentioned premium fuel may astucally be deterimental to the engine. I wouldn't use more than 89 octane.

Some will agrue that the CD series should be run on 16:1. However, 24:1 is prefectly fine with todays oil. I prefer to use synthetic oil as it smokes much less.
