I think the hardener is key. My interior is easily marked up.

I also have some flaking paint. Prep on the seats and spilled gas in the stern would be my guess.

Shot another coat on the trailer, after a weekend of setbacks. Shot another coat on the cowl for the motor after stripping it for the FOURTH TIME!!!!!(I'm done with this part!!#%@%&^#$). Drilled reveets and removed screws.....floor and transom are out.

And she's back on the trailer.
New bearings, seals, wiring, lights, winch, and bunks. I used UHMW plastic channels for the bunk covers vs carpet. WOW! it slides with little effort on the plastic and freshly greased keel rollers.
Now to get the remainder of the debris and wash the inside of the hull....

And we have lights......put 17 hours into the project today. Still have a couple things to do on the trailer but the floor has to go in tomorrow.

Pic of the substructure.. I used 1.5" 6061T6 aluminum "U" channel and angle. This is reeveted with 1/4" closed end aluminum reevets, steel mandrel.

Test fitting 1/2" plywood flooring. Tomorrow I will start glassing it in.

Is the floor sitting on the ribs or the chine ledge?

Re: 1963 Jet Star rebuild

The weight will be transferred to the ribs and the fold at the chine.

I'm working on how to engineer the footwell and still maintain the transfer along the keel.

I completely forgot to order the Transom Drain Tubes! Thankfully, our local West Marine had them in stock. I hope to have the transom in today.

Re: 1963 Jet Star rebuild

The reason I asked is because in the pic above, it seems the 2X4 is sitting on the chine ledges and stringer. So the floor is gapped above the ribs if I'm reading the pic right.

Correct, The center "rib" running the length of the keel will transfer the greater portion of the load.......that just struck me.. The original build has the majority of the underway load going to the sides several inches below the gunnel. So even with as stiff as its built the majority of the load will be going to ribs above the keel.....
Well the footwell, transom and sole is going better than the superstructure.....

To explain the photos above,
I glassed the transom with 435 and 1.5 ounce Chopped Strand Mat, CSM, in the center and .75 ounce on the faces. The bottom of the sole is glassed with 435 and 1.5 ounce.

Re: 1963 Jet Star rebuild

I have been feverishly working to get the boat ready for our trip, on the river to watch the fireworks, I failed to take pics... We splashed her last night! The break-in of the engine went well, she ran for 2.5 hours on 16:1.

Below is the "Floor pan" and "Foot rest". I wanted something that would tie into the structure for weight transfer and have foot well for stability when piloting. The foot rest is at an angle and tied into the width of the rib.

Looking sharp! So... just to clarify, is that floor pan lowered in comparison to the rest of the floor... or is it at the same height? Foot rest looks nice as well.

Re: 1963 Jet Star rebuild

Thank you, Gentlemen,
The Floor Pan is 4" lower than the top of the sole. I find this set up to be more comfortable, pain in the butt to configure, but worth it.

She made her maiden voyage this evening! We traveled up the Scioto River to the downtown Columbus, Ohio to watch the firework show from the water.

I don't believe the 10.75" 15 deg. prop was best suited for the job of pushing her in a swollen river with @750 lb in crew and 100 lb in equipment and bottled water......maxed out at 12 knots.......but the skipper did okay a new prop purchase and the four of us had a great time.

The carpet is due in on Friday and the remainder of the resin in due of Monday, looks like a much needed weekend of fishing is in order!

MaxRules prop guide:
View attachment Vintage Merc props.pdf

Against the swollen river 12k sounds ok, MaxRules chart shows you've got a prop that puts you in the right rpm range for a 1963 Merc 500.

Congrats on a stealth, under cover of darkness splash........

Skipper rules with an iron fist....and I wanted to go finshin before hunting season.

I did some prop testing ie beaching the boat, changing prop and seeing how quickly it will respond.

The 3 blade, cupped 15deg. prop liked to ventilate and maxed at 27k
The 3 blade, uncupped, 15deg. did not ventilate as quickly but only did 25k
The Quick Silver, bronze, 2 blade, 11deg, prop that she cam with, launched her like a scared dog and shot her to 32k with a the skipper and myself....... I have an 11 spline PropCo prop for sale, 15deg used ones for @400 yards. 100.00

Re: 1963 Jet Star rebuild

I did notice the porpoising. Shes got a hook to her, I tried to work some of it out with the new bunks and 6061T6 U channel on the ribs. Any suggestions on helping this?

I did cut the trailer bunks so they are extended @ 2" past the transom. Previously they were @ 18" short of the transom, I'm guessing this contributed to the issue.
