Re: 1964 16' Jupiter floor.

well I am starting to prep the sides of the boat for paint and had to take about a 2 ft section clear down to the Aluminum where the old numbers were. I tried to find some ZC primer in my area but could not, so I decided to buy this "1K self etching primer " from a local paint company witch they say is for bare Aluminum.

But now I am having second thoughts on if it will be sufficent or not, I have read other threads where people have thought they had the right primer only to have it flake off.

Here is a picture of the can and the boat with the spots primed. Do you guys think I will be ok with this stuff ?

Pay no attention to the label next to the can of primer, It is from the paint I used on the top side of the boat..

N--

that stuff will work fine (pro body shops use the exact same stuff), but you'll go broke buying it in spraybombs.

and on keeping it from flaking off, remember that aluminum starts to oxidize almost instantly after you give it the scotchbrite scrub....depending on your conditions, you usually want to get it primed within about an hour or less.

OOPs , To late, I sanded it last night and washed it today. about 14 hrs from sand to prime.

Do you think I should start over due to the time ?

given that the amount of work to do that will be about the same as if you had to re-do the job in a few years, i think i'd just leave it and see how it does.

Yea, in a couple of years I will probably want to change the color anyways and you ain't joking about the cost of that stuff in a spray can , one can cost me $15.85.

I might as well get a couple of years out of it if I can ...

Re: 1964 16' Jupiter floor.

The warm weather allowed me to get some stuff done to the boat, here is some pictures.

I am not sure if I like the color of the lower rub rail, What do you guys think ? Do you guys have any luck / sugestions in painting them ?

Also, for you guys that have done the windshield conversion, how tall does your windshield stand ? Mine is a 18 in. tall windshield that stands 13 in tall ( from the top of window to the bow). Do I have it on to much of a pitch ?

The cleat on the bow, Is it mounted with bolts or screws ?

Thanks,

Personally I could use a taller windshield on my SS since I am 6'5" so it depends on your needs.

The rig looks great:) I would absolutely use stainless steel bolts with lock washers or lock nuts on the cleats. If you ever use it to anchor, tow, or dock then it needs to be rock-solid.:D

HA's suggestion is the best way to mount those cleats. I would also suggest a support shim underneath too, wood or even better aluminum. I have read some guys use vinyl dye, spray can paint for vinyl, or even magic markers to color their rub rails. If the windshield blocks the wind from you when you sit down, leave it. "If it ain't broken..."

Boat looks great. Rub rail needs to be black. It's pretty hard plasticy kinda stuff as I remember. I bet you could paint it with that spray paint meant for plastic. Fusion I think it's called. Windshield looks great too. My converted windshield ended up being kinda low also and I did sit above it. However, it did a great job deflecting the the wind anyway and I could even wear a hat :)

Re: 1964 16' Jupiter floor.

When you guys paint the rub rail, do you have any problems with it chipping or getting marking up when docking ?

Also, lets talk about Trailers. I am thinking of not putting on the trailer guides because I do not want them to mark up the paint. I am thinking of making a set of rollers that would be about 12in. tall and roll along the Chine

what are your guys opinion on having trailer guides on these small boats ? are they really needed ?

I believe everyone that has those guides swear by them. They are needed with these bigger boats, especialy in wind or current. You could install your rollers and adjust them to roll on the side rail.

Another thing, I do not understand the full benefit of the tilt trailer, I know it is handy when painting the bottom of the boat. But what exactly is the correct way to use it when you launch the boat ? Do you also pull the pin when trying to put the boat back on the trailer ?

I have never had a trailer like this, and have never seen some one pull their pin at the boat ramp.

A how to video would be nice.

Re: 1964 16' Jupiter floor.

Tilt trailers are made for light boats, including aluminum boats. They will allow a boat to be launched in shallow water or where there is no ramp. In most cases, the wheel bearings don't need to even get in the water. It is important that the boat is balanced correctly on the trailer for optimum usage.;)

Well, I finished up the project today and made a slide show on U-tube from a few of the pictures I took. For those who are interested, here is the link.

I will wait until after the first of the year to get the new registration stickers, that way will be good threw 2013.

Many Thanks to you guys who gave me the help I needed, and good luck with your projects... :)
