Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Well guys... it look super shiney until it dried... then I noticed it is actually quite dull... after 5 attempts to shine it up I concluded that I am going to have to wet sand it then polish it... unless anyone else knows what to do here.... the big issue is that wherever there wasn't paint, the aluminum is really tarnished and spotted. Soooooo.... I am tried wet sanding a small area and then polishing it up... you can see the smooth area at the back of the boat where I sanded it...

It's kind of a fasination with me --- how to do it quick and well! I really like the polished look... but just can't seem to find a truly how shall we say "productive" way to do it! There just has to be a way that works well!! :)

Hey Jim, I think if you tried some aluminum brightner first, it would make the job a lot easier. Search parts by keyword - NAPA Auto Parts

Cool.... I just called them and they have a product for around $9 that the firemen use on their trucks that apparently works great. I also did some research on the proper polishing process, and for around $100 I can get an entire polishing kit that working with the angle grinder... but for this boat and for now, I am going to go the way of the brightener and if required, I will wet sand the boat and then polish and seal. I wet sanded the jupiter to smooth out the hull and then polished and I think it came out just fine for something that as LL said --- really nobody sees!

Also got a motor for this one that will be ready in the spring --- 50 hp Johnson with a new block, pistons, all the electronics and is a short shaft!

Should be a nice fit for this boat... should move out just fine. Anyone have any idea what this top speed will be --- roughly?

Man, Gib, having all them extras really slows a Jet down...

extras like seats, dual consoles, closed bow, windshields & etc...... :boink:

Must be that higher elevation that slows it down even more... :D Plus... didn't Jason only speed test when it was snowing ---- when the motor would run extra fast?? :D :D

Sanding and Polishing Part 2a:

Ok... spent some time early am and here's what it boils down to: The aluminum is scratched and scored up enough that it is pretty rough in spots. So, I am doing what I did on JII --- 150 --> 400 --> 600 -->1500 wet sand to 3 polish coats and 1 coat of sealant. The following pics show from 400 grit onwards. The back is going to need 150 grit to get it to smooth untarnished alum and from mid hull onwards towards the bow 400. Above the waterline at the bow I will likely not sand as it looks pretty darn good already --- just polish and sealant. Sooooo here are a few shots of the test area:

In the 3rd shot you can really see the difference between the sides and you can still see the tarnished area on the left a bit where there wasn't any paint on the hull for likely many years.

Again... not going for mirror finish... just a nice, clean, consistent aluminum finish that with the polish and sealant should last many years --- well the sealant maybe a year or two.

I left the Jupiter in the water for what amounted to about 3 straight months this summer and after a quick wash with water and scrub brush, the hull looked as good as the day I finished polishing and sealing it!

Have a great evening folks!

Jim - What did you use to seal JII, Sharkhide or the stuff Dozer used?

Same stuff as Glen --- Sonus. Worked great. I will put another coat on in the spring as JII will be in the water for 3+ months again... so why not take the hour or so to do it. To be honest, putting three coats + of polish on really puts a solid coat on the aluminum as well. If I hadn't know better, I wouldn't have put a sealant on at all... but the sealant is recommended and just gives that extra level/layer of protection.

Thanks, Jim. I keep flip/flopping like a politician about paint or shine. Some day I have to get off the stump.
