Morning Jim, polish is coming a long nicely. The sonus polish is just a cutting compound designed to take the tarnish off the aluminum, without the protectant you would find the tarnish come back very quickly

True enought.... the polish just makes it "appear" that one wouldn't need the sealant as it shines well without it!

Thanks, Jim. I keep flip/flopping like a politician about paint or shine. Some day I have to get off the stump.

Ya... I hear ya! I debated this as well... but in the end, boy am I glad that I went that way with JII. This boat and the Falcon are going "The Way O The Shine" as well. Clean up is a snap and it doesn't get marked up or scratched up like a painted hull does. I like painted hulls as well --- it's just that this looks... well... less like a glasser and more tinny like! Like most things, beauty is the eye of the beholder!

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

So I managed to sand one side of the hull --- 150 to 400 to 600 to 1500 and clean. Consistent would be the word I would use to describe the hull now. Perfect... heck no! But much improved. Tomorrow all being well, will be the other side. Then the polishing begins. For those that are interested in times to get hull polished and sealed: about 3 hrs of sanding and about 3 hrs of polishing + about 1 hr of sealing and approx. 1 hr of misc cleanup == total 8 hrs or so. Not sure what the prep time for painting would be + etch, prime and paint... similar? or longer?? Just curious.

I bet the total time for both would be real close to the same, by the time you feather all the chips, etch, dry time, prime dry time, paint 1st coat, dry time second coat.

Fake work:horn:

Ya... Ya... Doubting Thomas you! :)

Polished... one side!

It has more shine than it looks in the photo's in real life... but it leans more towards the satin side than the mirror finish. Big thing is: It looks just fine to me!

Tomorrow am... I'll aim at getting the other side done and then apply the sealant.

Before flipping it back over I need to scuff up the sides for etch/prime/paint readiness.

Have a great one fellas!

Hey fella's!

Quick update --- hull is polished and sealed and ready to go. Just need to do a quick sand on the sides so that they are scuffed up for painting in the spring and I will be flipping the boat over to be gluvitted!

HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!!

Take care,

Jim

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

It's coming along great so far! My Jet has screws(I'm pretty sure there screws will check again later) coming through random spots in the hull. Looks like they were put in by the PO as they aren't holding anything together. Do I need to remove these and JB Waterwels it? I would post in my thread but not replies in 2 months...:(
