I just bought a sea star boat with a 1965 RXEL 13 (thanks to those on this forum who helped me ID the motor). The fuel pump was not working, I replaced it today,a nd it is now pumping fuel, but the engine still wont start.

If I squirt gas into the carb it will fire up instantly, but dies once you stop giving it fuel directly into the carb. I took the line off from the pump to the carb, and tried blowing air into it, nothing. Sprayed a little carb cleaner into it, no help.

My theory is that the float is stuck and not allowing suel into the carb bowl. Any ideas as to wether r not I am on the right track? I dont want to take the carb apart, but was wondering if I could take the bowl off without screwing things up, or am I better off taking it over to the local boat shop and letting them work on it at this point.

Whats the history.

Has it sat up for a long period of time.
Are all fuel lines air tight.
When was the last time the carbs were cleaned.

Is fuel getting to the carbs.
Check inline filter.
if these 2 are fine then check the carbs (Sounds like they need rebuilding and a good cleaning)

Pull the line off from the fuel pump at the carb, pull the engine over and see if the pump is pumping fuel to the carb. If the pump is pumping fuel to the carb it's time to pull the carb and overhaul it.

Here is the history of the engine as I know it. It was recently running, a few months ago, and developed a problem, it would start, idle and go up to half throttle then stall.

I have replaced the fuel line from the tank to the engine, and the line from that connection to the pump, and from the pump to the carb. When I pulled this last line off the nipple for the line to attach to the pump was broken off. I installed the new pump today.

I took the line from the pump to the carb off and cranked the engine, it pumps lots of fuel.

I can not blow air through this line, or get fuel or carb cleaner to run into the carb. The fuel is getting to the carb, but not into the engine.

Is there anyway to clean the carb without removing it? I thought about spraying carb cleaner into it and letting it sit overnight, but dont want to damage any seals etc inside the carb by doing this.

You are going to have to remove the carb and clean it properly paying attention to the needle and seat, it sounds like it is stuck in the closed position.
Just spraying carb cleaner into the carb does nothing to clean the passages of the carb.

Sounds like it is time to enlist a pro, I am a handy guy, and mechanically inclined, but I have never taken a carb apart and would be worried about messing things up worse than they are now. Thanks for the help guys!

I'm a bit late to this thread, but I have a '66 33 hp and I was able to rebuild the carb without much trouble. The only tough part is that you have to take the electric starter and its bracket off in order to get to one of the nuts holding the carb on the motor. No need to take the starter out of the bracket, just reomove the nuts and bolts holding on the bracket. Once it's off, it's prety simple to clean, rebuild and reinstall the carb. I was able to get mine emaculate in one afternoon with one can of carb cleaner. Good luck.

I continue to hear the use of carb cleaner. Carb cleaner is good for cleaning the outside of carbs only. In fact carb cleaner can damage carbs, the finishes used and particularly plastic parts. In addition it has a problem removing shelac deposits, the hard brown muck that clogs carbs.
In stead use Gunk parts and carb cleaner. It is in a gallon can and comes with a small parts container. Follow the instructions and all will be well.
Obtainable from auto parts stores.
Get a carb kit from your dealer and replace the parts that come in it.
No I don't have shares in the company.
Good luck.

It's harder to re and re the carb then it is to actually rebuild it. Really. They are very easy to rebuild. Getting it off is harder. Try it. There's tons of help on this forum. If concerned about anything take pictures before disassembly.
