Glad to hear you are back to work on the rig Spellbound:)

I've heard that sandblasting is ok on aluminum but you have to be really careful. Walnut shells have been used as an alternative that's softer.

I hear ya on the "hot"..
Dropped a bloodworm topside this afternoon and swear i heard it sizzle, lol
You really don't needto blast if the original paint is in decent shape,no big flakes or bare spots. You can scuff, wash n paint.
If u do blast...baking soda is the least damaging material.
Welcome back!

I think one of the fella on here sand blasted and ended up having to replace his entire bow deck as it warped. So be careful! Cheers!

Re: 1966 starcraft starchief restore

hey guys, glad to see you didnt totally abandon this thread.and thanks for the concerns about sandblasting. I dont think its going to be a problem though, I've done a small area as you can see from my latest pics and it seems to be going well. I dont think its going to warp or damage the hull in any way. The paint is really bad, lot of chipping and flaking and big bare spots. I did think about soda blasting it, but i opted to use garnet. The garnet is pretty agressive and takes it down to bare metal fast, I think its going to be ok but i will proceed with caution and a watchful eye for warpage.
I will say though that the sandblasting sure does work well and i think faster than sanding it. I'm planning on using a self etching primer on it when i paint.
I do have a question though...under the plywood floor there is styrofoam as you all know. My question is a little hard to explain but i'll try. my wife works for a roofing company that does the spray on foam for flat roofs. I'm wondering if i could have them spray on both sides of the center (see the pics with the old styrofoam in the center of the boat. Wondering if that would be a problem? If i have them spray, then there wont be any space between the foam and the metal bottom of the boat, wondering if there needs to be a space (for drainage). Anybody have any thoughts on that? LOL in this forum I'm sure everyone has thoughts on that. I really havent done a whole lot of sandblasting yet, Its still to damn hot!!! Seems like this heat just wants to keep hanging on forever. It was 111 degrees on sunday and it was about 108 yesterday.

:eek:Yup, that would be a biggie as I see it! If you went that route you wouldn't have any drainage at all and asking for a big time rot/mold/corrosion problem in the near future. If you laid down channels down the middle and from the sides to the middle you'd probably be ok. No pour in or spray in foam for me though - scared.

Yeah I don't think I'd put pourable or spray foam into an aluminum boat.

Pink or blue foam boards and pool noodles work well to avoid waterlogged foam and allow maximum drainage. When it rains you want the water to get into the bilge quickly so it can be pumped out, and limber holes only drain so much water.

It's best to leave big channels in the middle/keel and on the edges under the deck.:)

Well, and to be fair...

There are some pour in foam guys around here that would love to have access to what you have there. They just may not post up for fear of an internet beat down!

I think for a good number of us we have decided that the pour in stuff just doesn't belong and noodles/foam board is the way to go. Some dudes around here are even hatching plans for plastic bottles sub deck!! I know weird right!:D

not tryin to hijack, but have you folks ever seen what happens to those plastic bottles during extremely cold weather. All the air leaves them. Again not tryin to stir anything up, but I'm suprised noone's ever mentioned that here before.

And I am surprised that I have never thought of that before!

Thanks NB, nothing wrong with a little stirring now and then!

No hijacking - headed over to my thread to post up.
