Greetings, this is my first post on the forum.

Anyways, I just picked up what I think turned out to be an awesome deal!

I bought a 1967 Evinrude Fisherman 6hp on craigslist for $50 with 3 gas tanks!!

The guy I bought it from said he hadnt run it in years, and it just sat in his garage.

I got it home, cleaned it up a bit, poured some fresh fuel/oil in the tank and on the third pull it fired up and held a steady idle...

Anyways, my main questions are what should I do to the engine aside from a lower unit oil change which I plan on doing tomorrow? I thought it would need some work to get running since it sat for so long, but it honestly seems to be running perfect.

What is a good setting to place the low speed idle micture knob on?

I also was wondering if this engine is supposed to have a water pump check hole that shows the pump is pumping?

I did notice some water was spraying/sputtering out of the exhaust hole on the shaft... is that a good indication that the water pump/cooling system is functioning?

Also is this a difficult engine to do a water pump install on just in case I decide to throw in a new impeller?

This is my first evinrude outboard, and I am very excited to get my raft fixed up and get out on the water!

thanks,

CHRISTIAN

welcome Christian, you are on the right track, link below, read 'awakening a sleeping outboard' and 'carb controls, by Joe Reeves'. http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&f=31&page=1&pp=50&sort=lastpost&order=desc&daysprune=-1

there should be and inspection plate on the side of the exhaust housing 1"x2" remove cover, inside should be a link with 2 screws. this is the shift linkage. you loosen the bottom screw, don't take completely out, then remove the bolts around the lower unit, and it should drop out. impeller is simple. notice which way the vanes are bent. reverse for reassembly. be sure to get water tube and shift linkage lined up. also it is easier if you remove the spark plugs so you can turn flywheel by hand, inorder to get the shaft splines lined up. good luck.

Set the slow speed misture to where it idles the best. Not rocket science.

Water spray out the back is the indicator.

As for the water pump, I'm not 100% sure about the shift rod disconnect on the '67, but at least by '68 they had a disconnect inside where the lower unit separates from the exhaust housing. Before the disconnect, you had to remove the powerhead to undo the shift rod in order to get the lower unit off. If it does have a disconnect, remove the spark plugs. Remove the four bolts holding the lower unit on. Slowly rotate the flywheel while pulling the lower unit down (there is a pin that needs to go down through a slot). Disconnect the shift rod, pull the lower unit off and the water pump will be looking right at you. Note: when disassembling the water pump, it is not necessary to remove the fore-mentioned pin. Just pull the shaft out of the lower unit. When you go to put it back together, use a flashlight to peer in there and make sure the notch in the shift rod is aligned EXACTLY with the screw hole. If the screw drags on the edge of the notch it will wipe the threads off the screw every time. Then it will fall out 5 miles from shore.

Buy a good service manual if you intend to do your own work.

I think all the 6 hp's had the shift disconnect like the one explained by FR. You have to remove the four bolts that hold the lower unit to the exhaust tower. Put shifter in reverse, drop the lower unit an inch or so and dissconnect the lower shift rod screw.

Thankyou very much for all the replies and thanks for the diagram!! :)

I have learned a lot by reading through several previous threads last night! Great forum!

One more quick question on this motor; is it ok to use a 50:1 ratio? I have read in other posts that many people recommend running a lower ratio on the older engines?

Also, on the hinge part of the motor where it swivels left and right for steering, there appears to be a little nipple that looks like a place to insert a grease gun... Am I right in assuming this?

50:1 is the correct mix. Yes, there should be a grease nipple.
