1967 Starline Deville - Replacing Ram Questions

So I have this really nice, all original 1967 Starline Deville and it runs really well but I noticed one of the hydraulic rams is leaking and enough oil leaked out that I can't raise the outdrive.

I found a local Marina that actually has one in stock, they don't have two, just one or I would buy them both so I have a replacement for the other side. One of the older guys that looks like his worked their from the 1960's told me they don't make this type of ram any longer and he can't get a seal kit for it?

I haven't looked online yet but I'm hoping to find a kit or another replacement or a place that can rebuild these things.

Here's the boat, followed by a question, it runs out about 35 miles per hour and pulls skiers up without any problems. I'm pretty confident I'm the second owner as I bought it at an Estate Sale in SoCal.

Question: If I carefully unbolt the hydraulic line and then remove the ram, how does one go about bleading out the hydraulic system?

???

the best i can do for you is give you this link to download manual #1 for your engine/drive:

http://www.4shared.com/document/ozc1_97A/Service_Manual_01.html

in it you will find the instructions for installing a new ram and bleeding the tilt/trim system

the newer style systems are self bleeding but i think those old styles have a special procedure for bleeding, it will be detailed in the manual

Where ever you are located, there must be a hose company. By that I mean, hydraulic hoses. I know NAPA & so on can make hoses. But They don't rebuild rams!
For instance; There is a major company that supplies engines & drives to boat companys, that when the o-ring fails at the aft end, thus allowing water into oil, don't even have an o-ring/seal kit to offer for replacement. Take it to the hose quy, he does his thing & my people are happy!

They'll explain bleeding procedure , also.

Thank you. I have a good relationship with our local NAPA and this is a fishing town in South Florida, there's a couple of local hydraulic hose companies around, I'll check with them.

Checked and noted.

Cool. Thank you!

Re: 1967 Starline Deville - Replacing Ram Questions

I only wish my 67 looked as good as yours. I needed a cylinder arm once & called around to boat shops until I found a used one for like $30 ,its a shot in the dark but was advised it should work & it did.
Haven't got that far this year I think my problem is inside the pump seeing its not working right with lines unhooked.

Re: 1967 Starline Deville - Replacing Ram Questions

I bought the ram and read the manual. In the manual it states to use 20w motor oil in the reservoir for the hydraulic system.

I went to the auto parts store but the closest thing I could find was 5w 20 motor oil.

Will this work?

The guy at the Marina where I bought the ram told me to use ATF and just add it right into the reservoir. This means the ATF will be mixing with the oils that's still there. This didn't sound like a good idea to me.

Advice and suggestions?

5W-20 oil will work perfectly fine in the pump

merc spec for new pumps is 10W-30/40, but really any oil will work fine
