Hello,

I am new to the forum, after a few days of going trough posts and reading, I have decided to join this great community.

I am also new and pretty uneducated when it comes to boats. Recently, I have purchased a 1971 Dixie with the mentioned motor. This is my first boat, and Id like to kindly ask a few question. What is the best oil to be used on lower unit/gear lube? What is the best battery that would suit me?

You can get lower unit gear lube at your dealer. It's basically a 90 weight oil with additives in it. The mix for the engine is 50:1 oil:gas. Batteries I don't know much about.

Thank you for the quick reply. I will look into locating a dealer in my area. On another note, as you seem knowledgeable, what is the fuel consumption of this motor? Or to put into better words, how long will it run on Two-6gallon fuel tanks.

Not long. About 1.2 hours. This is based on the standard consumption model of 1 gal/hr per 10hp at WOT.

Ah that is a little disappointing, perhaps I will look into acquiring the original tank. The boat came without it, instead 2-6gal plastic tanks took its place.

The factory has discontinued making the old original metal tanks. You should be able to locate a used original metal tank if that is your preference. Just be sure the inside is clean. Many of the older metal ones have been discarded due to rust, debris inside from years of use. The new factory ones are all plastic. Saves weight and they don't rust inside. Some aftermarket plastic tanks are not built as well as the current factory plastic ones. You can visually see the difference.

I found a original metal tank for my exact model, but the plastic option might better suit me, and should be a little cheaper. Thanks. Any ideas on what battery I should get?

I'm not positive, but didn't Evinrude and Johnson's of that year use OMC Type C fluid in the lower gearcase? Maybe someone else will know

I have heard this too, precisely why I asked the question to begin with, as I think I have been a little mislead by now. Still not 100% sure what the right fluid is.

Sander, your lower unit is an older style electric shift type. It does take special fluid, unlike most all current outboards. You need to seek out a Bombardier dealer and get some oil called "Premium Blend." This is specially made for those electric shift gearcases.

Thank you for clearing some things up for me, is Bombardier Gear a brand? I did a quick search without any useful info. Any suggestions where I might find/order the Premium Blend?

Just a little addition to your conversation, You should pick up a mixing bottle for your gasoline mix. It takes the guess work out.

Many boaters enjoy a very nice day on the water with 2-6 gallon tanks. Full throttle to plane is fine, then stay away from full throttle which burns a ton more fuel relative to speed.

I highly recomment buying the manual for the motor. I found a lot of good info in there about lower end oil, gas/oil mix, plugs and alike.

Bombardier is the current owner of the Johnson/Evinrude/SeaDoo brands-since the 2000 model year. Specifically, (BRP) Bombardier Recreational Products. You can get the premium blend gear oil at any Evinrude (Bombardier) outboard dealer. BRP discontinued the Johnson brand at the end of the 2007 model year. If you intend on doing your own maintenance, you can view exploded parts diagrams for your engine on the Bombardier website: epc.brp.com

Got the manual in today

Going to be doing a few things over the weekend, and hopefully start her.

I suppose not a lot of people own old-grandpa-motors, or maybe just not the particular one I have.


EDIT : Changed the gearlube, and fixing some minor electrical issues as awell as a fuse. The motor started after a few cranks and sounds great.
