Re: 1972 SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

I'm looking to do the exact setup on my SS. I've got my short shaft Evinrude 15HP and a ridiculously beefy stainless adjustable kicker bracket. I'll be mounting it in pretty much the exact same spot because I'm putting my swim platform on the port side (due to their already being holes their from a previous platform and believe or not they actually line up with my new one!).

One thing you'll need to keep in mind is the transom wood brace under the splash well. After measuring 3-4 time I was sure I'd miss it, however I was 1/8 too close and wasn't able to turn the nut on one of the mounting bolts. It took me longer to grind out a notch on the brace the it would have to just fill the hole hand drill another.

Also, even though the instructions for the bracket were fairly clear, I would have liked to mark the water line on the boat and installed it based on that point. Like I said earlier, I think I'm about a inch or so to high, but only a trip to the lake will confirm that...

Your rehabbed Johnson looks great back there man;)

Thanks! However before it looked like crap, now I have to keep it clean lol, Though I guess that includes the whole boat now as well ;)

Yeah my failed paint job has been a "blessing" in that respect I suppose ;)

Thanks for the kicker bracket info.

Had a blast! Boat ran well. Hit 41 mph on the gps, she had more in her however I zip tied the tnt control to the throttle lever and I couldn't get it past 3/4. Sure a rocket though! Jumped up on plane in just a few seconds.

I do have to have a look at the tiny tach at some point. I have a feeling i have a couple too many wraps on the plug wire and it giving me a faulty reading. I was having a Hell of a time keeping her running at the dock it kept missing and stalling. However she ran smooth as silk throughout the rest of the power band. At our fast speed on water the rpms read 10,000+ lol. So its obviously reading high so I think my initial idle reading of 1,300 might actually be closer to 6-650. I guess that just means another trip to the lake... DARN! ;).

Absolutly great looking SS, good to see her out on the water. Won't take long to wring out the bugs.

congrats! you're now into the fun part of the work. sounds like you still might have some sludge in carb idle circuits? i'll be curious to hear how the tinytach does once you get it sorted as i'm considering one of those for my Lesser Tinnie

Re: 1972 SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

I'm almost positive its the tach. I remember last year it work flawlessly on my 125 Evinrude and I'm sure I only had 3-4 wraps around the plug. This year with the new johnson I put six wraps on it. I had a look on tiny tach's website and it states 3-4 wraps, any more and it becomes too sensitive. Which I think accounts for the wild readings at speed. It seems as if throughout the power band I was getting double the readings. So if that's the case my idle may actually be too low throwing off the timing. that would explain the periodic miss and the trouble I had starting it.

Those colors look FANTASTIC! Nice work on the boat repaint!

I WAS thinking about going a nice red and white combo as well, still might but I was also thinking of going orange and white about the same layout. Very nice!
