Re: 1973 14' SmokerCraft Zephyr Rebuild

Thanks dood!:)

Yah, I have to rebuild the transom anyway so making the plywood 20" instead of 15" is obviously nothing. I already have aluminum for the skin too. So, freebee to go full height. Plus, if I want to repower down the road, long shaft 25hp are way more plentiful round here.

Ah, I dunno, I'll think on it anyway. I could have my shop students fab something like that up real easy though too. Free vs. $122:)

I tried to buy a tiller outboard one time... they said I couldn't own one because my mother and father were married to each other when I was born!

I too just found this thread, prolly just thought it was another rotten glass thread earlier.

Looking forward to seeing how she turns out because I plan on purchasing a similar boat and may need to steal some of your ideas.

The simple rod holders in the last pic of your tillers will go in my 58 for sure.

Soooooooooo many rotted glassers, so few landfills:rolleyes:

Well, for sure I want to stay very focused on having this SmokerCraft be a no frills, super simple, no extras, straight forward fishing rig. Nothing fancy going on in this boat.

I've got the trailer pretty well wrapped up but I'll post up the final result rather than bore yall with trailer work.

One week till the walleye opener. I have a decision to make.

Start the demo work on the boat and skip it.

Or, go super ghetto shadetree boat builder, bolt/screw on some plywood for the transom, mount the Johnson, go fishing.

Hmmmmm....

Yah, walleye is just about the best table fair a man can pull from the water;) Yummy:D

Thanks rheagler, I like your thinking:D

K, rain really messes with the river, swells big time which makes it very tough to fish. I just checked the forecast, no rain all week which should make for a great opening day:)

Yup, I do believe there will be a ghetto boat riding on a nice rebuilt trailer, headed to the launch this weekend:D

Too ghetto or not too ghetto, that is the question..........

I do believe a weekend of fishing is definitely in order. There's plenty of time to get her ready, taller transom & all. Good deal, hope you get your limit, but not too quick.

Have great week

As a famous playwright once said...and I am paraphrasing here...

"To Fish, or not to Fish? That is the question...

Whether it is nobler to stay home and work on whatever, or to go out on the water and try to hook the big one..."

Awwww,

New paint, coupler, safety chains, winch, stand, tires/galvanized rims, bow stop, keel rollers, bunks/hardware, LED lights, guide on's, axle, whew...

Just need to connect the wires and bolt on the plate, and done!

(I'll load some video on the morrow)

Re: 1973 14' SmokerCraft Zephyr Rebuild

I love this boat, and I think the trailer is looking awesome... However, as a pure bred southern red neck, I must say that the existing paint job is one of the worst attempts at camoflauge I have ever seen... Yeah, let's see, let's throw a few yellow mustard streaks on top of that faded baby blue and the ducks will never see us....????

Now that I have seen the trailer all shiny and white, I have to re-up my vote for a white paint job...

It's going to look great!!!... and I can't wait to see at all cleaned up and ready to fish...

Have a good one, my friend!
