Hi,

My father has a '75 75hp Johnson stinger. i'm not a big boat guy and was wondering if i could get some advice. The motor was rebuilt a year ago so it has new pistons, rings, and good compression on all cylinders. The motor runs fine at idle and strong at wide open throttle. The issue is that totally boggs hard when you first try to accelerate. I'm assuming that its the carbs. They haven't been touched since he bought the motor in '75. They didn't even do anything with them when the rebuilt the motor. If my diagnosis sounds reasonable, how hard is rebuilding and adjusting the carbs. The only carb experience i have is with a 1V carb on my 72 form maverick. Any help would be awesome. Thanks

John,

Whoever rebuilt that engine and didn't do the carb's. needs a serious talkin' to.

The carbs are simpler than your one bbl Mav. carb. There is just three of them.

Get an OEM manual and follow it. You can do all three in a couple hours.

I would take some digital pic's. of the linkages, before you start.

Re: 1975 Johnson 75hp stinger Issues

Thanks for the advice. i really do want to try to work on it myself. I found an oem service manual on ebay for a 1975 johnson 75hp motor. Was there a standard 75 horse johnson and a 75 horse johnson stinger? I guess even if there was would a 1975 oem manual for a 75hp johnson motor give me what i needed. thx for any help...i really appreciate it. Sorry if i sound like someone of a novice...gotta start somewhere...haha

Thx again for the assistance. The manual is on it's way. Hopefully with a manual i will be able to better understand what all need done. Having no experience makes a triple carb rebuild tough. thx again. any other suggestions are welcome...i can take all the help i can get.

Is it the standard shaft (20") or a short shaft(15")?

I don't know. I could pull, rebuild and install my old Maverick carb in about a 1/2 hour when I was a kid. Seemed to need a full disassembly and cleaning about every 6 months :).

Having said that, if you can do a car carb, you can do this. Nothing special, you just have 3 carbs to do.

Lot's of threads here giving instructions on the process plus the manual and carb kit instructions will walk you through it fine.

There's more to a true 1975 75 Stinger than just a marketing gimmick.

Model number, size of the prop or measure from under the clamp bracket to the AV plate. Or a picture......

I've been looking at the carb rebuilt kits available and noticed there are two different brands. Is either the Sierra or mallory a better quality kit or does it not matter? thx

I just acquired a 75hp Johnson Stinger orange in color. The choke solenoid releases but the choke butterflies don't pop open. Is it lubrication or is a return spring missing? There isn't a return spring now.

The "standard" 1975 Johnson was a 70 HP motor. The "Stinger" had different graphics and was a 75 HP motor that ran at a higher max rpm. Both were available as a long shaft model (20" transom). Only the Stinger had a short shaft option (15" transom), but it was classified as a limited production "racing model", so it's doubtful that yours is a short shaft.

Sierra parts are as good as the oem parts.

Maybe you should start your own thread instead of resurecting an old thread.

I was still a sprout when this was started and bellied up. Start your own thread.
