I'd recommend using a Free Photobucket account to post your pics.

Thanks Grandad, I was out doing just that , lifting the deck. Makes me nervous to get into the structure but it's the only way. What do you think of two 3/4 and 3/8 around the key hole. ???

I'd get the old transom out first and then measure what thickness will fit snuggly between the transom skin and the inside of the Z brackets. Don't forget to include the thickness of any sealers. As in my thread below, I first tried a mickeymouse transom repair, replacing only the top 11" or so. On that first try, I discovered that two 3/4" pieces were too thick and had to trim the scab where it fitted into the brackets. On the second and proper repair, I was more vigilant before laminating 3/4" and 5/8" together with Gorilla glue and stainless steel wood screws. I also had two layers of Formica that made up the exact dimension needed. After you determine the basic thickness, figure out the required thickness around the keyhole. It's a big job, but don't get discouraged. Each part of the job, when well done, will give you satisfaction and encouragement for the next step. - Grandad

Sorry no pics today until I figure that out later. I am cutting my boards, picking up some all thread 3/4 inch rods w/washers to mash the whole thing together after gluing. Dodging rain drops in Michigan. Checking the threads for moral support.
My board was so rotted not sure I can get a measurement from it for thickness. I see where one 3/4 and one 5/8 plus adhesive will work in the Z brackets. Then I'll measure to make my 2 inches for the collar. It cost more when I try to get ahead of myself and don't wait for answers. Thanks again.

Some use threaded rod with 2x4's and washers to clamp their boards. Others use stainless wood screws. It's such a big piece I haven't decided how to clamp them together.

Imgur is a really easy photo hosting site to use, and I haven't run into any "exceeding bandwidth" issues. All my project photos are hosted there (I don't even have an account), and if you you click on "view image" on any of my photos you can get full resolution. I kind of dislike photobucket because I never registered and it's a pain to look at stuff if you're not a member, but that's just my laziness, and my $.02.

Or if you have an old ford tractor just sitting there... it makes a good squisher! :)

I thought about that. The tractor looks like a great way to squish with wheel weights too. . I like the way the boards are layed out. Today is glue day.
When it comes to drilling the holes around the keyhole ,, are they drilled horizontal or follow the angle of the transom after installation of the board???

Can and should that horse collar be put on after the big board is put in? It would make more room sliding the big board in since I have only a limited amount of clearance. . I can put a few clamps thru the keyhole to glue it. After 24 hours , I am going to sand the out side edge and coat the whole thing in spar. There's so many ways water can get in . Even though I am doing my best to seal them all. I'm going to use epoxy in the drilled holes. The weatherman promised 24 hours without rain. HA! I'll keep plastic on standby.

I would like to ad that when I removed my depth and speedo wires. I tied a string to the end with a piece if tape over the knot. When I go to pull it back thru it should be a breeze. Replacing gas lines while there is acce$$. No leaks but almost 40 years old. Found my IBoats Mercruiser Stern Drive Manual. Bought it from IBoats 2009. Worth every penny.

Pics http://digitalskypilot.imgur.com/all/ After I started to lift the lid, I bent the top real good on the corner. Then I had help go inside and prop it up from there with 2x4's

I/O keyhole transom bolts should be 90* to the transom. You can post pix from imgr IN your posts. Some can't access PB/Imgr at work because of firewalls & etc.

Having to open & view attachments separate from reading the forum post makes it more time consuming.

It looks like you've got the transom whipped now...
Adding the 'horse collar' ply after you get the larger plywood transom in the boat sounds like a good plan. Keeps you from having to bend the gunwale & trim even farther apart to gain access.

Good work

I won't relax until I start buttoning things up. I am hoping that I don't have to lift the top any further than it is. Thanks for posting the pic.

In Imgr I chose to auto resize my pics so I could place the URL on the forum. I chose a small size . But when I go to load the pics they are still big. I don't know why. Do they have a Imgr book for dummies.?

I don't use imgr so I don't know how it's supposed to work. W/ photobucket (PB) there's an IMG
Code:
for each pix, via cut/paste I put the pix in my posts, using that IMG [code]. PB auto-size/formats my pix when I upload them to 1024 X 768 image size.

Finally. I used Photo Bucket to resize. 1024 X 768 . I had trim wires sticking thru the drive going to the limit switches. They have never worked and I don't need them. I need to make sure there's no leakage in that hole.

I'd like your thoughts about Premium Waterproof Silicone. sun, freeze proof, won't crack, shrink or crumble, and is flexible. I am wondering how that would work in the bolt holes. It adheres to aluminum.

That's some fine looking ply you got hold of there. I love the look and feel of 7 layer 3/4 marine grade, nothing else like it. I used marine silicone to seal everything I thought I might want to take apart again someday, (thru hull fittings, transom bolts, motor bolts) everything else got some 5200.
