Here's what happened. The motor was running great. When the boat died, we were able to get it running again. We put the boat into Drive (IDLE). As we were coasting down the channel at idle, the boat stopped running. We were unable to get it back to running condition. Everything was still in place, and did not need adjusting. It would crank, just wouldn't turn over.

It doesn't appear that a gear stripped. We have good spark on all wires and plugs. We tried starting it without the plugs in the block, to clear the cylinders. The carbs do not have an air filter on them. They have an air "pin". The bowls on the carbs were pretty full, so we emptied them. The floats appeared to be ok and clean. We did not re-connect the fuel line, and we used starting fluid and it still would not run. The rotor in the distributor is good.

Any thoughts on this would be great. I am sure it is a minor issue, maybe with a loose gasket or bad fuel. It recently had a tune up, new impeller, and a new water pump installed.

Possible??? Compression test first.
The flywheel key sheared.Check that.

Compression is fine.

Thinking that maybe that I had gas from last year in there and that messed it up.

Also, maybe a gasket isn't tight on the carbs somewhere and therefore the vacuum is not there.

Could you explain the flywheel problem that you referenced?

Thank you!

There is a key for indexing the flywheel. If it shears it(flywheel) can rotate and still fire the plugs just way out of time and no start.
Unhook the fuel at the pump.Squeeze the ball into a glass jar or clear container.
That will tell if there is water in your system.
If you tried starting fluid and no fire then my first guess is the key.
Starting fluid is a big no no! It strips the cylinder walls.
If you got no results from that.It should make it fire for a few seconds anyway.
