Way cool video. Thanks. From about the 12-13 second range, I see a white cable that is also on mine that I am guessing has to be disconnected as well.

Re: 1979 StarCraft with a small area of transom rot

Well, looks like i will be starting this project tomorrow. Many people have been telling me I can lay the engine down on its side. I will probably have to do just that. I will probably use a bunch of carpeting to create a soft surface.

Thank you, all of you for your help. Any other last advice?

A couple old tires work well for laying a motor on it's side.

Well I got the engine off now, and I unbolted and unscrewed everything from the transom. Tomorrow I will take out the transom and create a new one. Then I will have to wait for the glue to dry for putting the two pieces of plywood together. I will post pictures on here soon to show progress.

If the transom gives you trouble coming out, try prying up on it from the inside with a 2x4. I tried all manner of silliness to get mine to break free before that finally did the trick.

In regards to that board that sits on the outside of the hull underneath the engine, it didint look like it rotted at all. Just a bit dry. Nonetheless, I am making a new one. I would prefer to paint it white as to match every thing else on my transom. One other person wokring on this with me insists I varnish it with Spar as well. But I would rather have it be white. Thoughts?

No problem, just sand it first. O r better yet just cut a new one out of 1/4" alluminum sheet and never have to do it again.

I almost forgot. There is some type of gasket on the splash guard where it met the wood of the transom. What do you all suggest I use to remove that old gasket? What should I replace it with and where can I find it?

Thanks.

Glass shops sell rolls off 1/2"wide gasket for sealing picture windows, it is cheap and works great.

Re: 1979 StarCraft with a small area of transom rot

In regards to using Spar Varnish, one guy at a paint store recommended to dilute the first coat of varnish with mineral spirits so it soaks in better. Would you guys agree? Also, what kind of drying time should be allowed for this project and how many coats did you use for those who have done this?

Thanks,

Marcus

You can thin the first coat, I never have, just me. Follow the can directions on recoat times otherwise each additional coat will take forever to dry.

Re: 1979 StarCraft with a small area of transom rot

What should I use as a caulk for running a bead across the top of the splash guard where it meets the transom. Should that be just a sealant type caulk material or should it be a sealant/adhesive?
