I have a 1984 Yamaha 150 v6 engine and for the second time in about 2 years the oil control unit has failed. The way it failed is that the main tank on the engine overfills by the pump in the sub tank not cutting off. I determined that the oil controller was the problem by grounding the white wire to the controller after disconnecting it from switch1 coming from the oil level sensor. Grounding that wire should turn off the pump in the sub tank and it did not, indicating that the oil controller is bad. Also, the blue wire going to the pump was not grounded which was the only other possible cause. I used the diagnostic explained in the Bass & Walleye Boats article "Slippery Solution".

My problem is that the oil controller on my engine is an earlier model with different single connectors going to the oil level sensor and single pluggable connectors going elsewhere on the engine. I have found out that the earlier oil controller (6E5-85740-02-00) is no longer available and it has been replaced by 6E5-WS857-00-00. I ordered the newer controller and when I received it the connectors to the oil level sensor and elsewhere were different. The connector to the oil level sensor is a 4 wire plug instead of single wires and the rest of the wires from the new controller go to a 7 wire female connector. I have the Yamaha service manual for my engine and it appears that the only real difference are the connectors.

Has anyone out there retrofitted the newer oil controller (1985 & newer) to an older engine? If so, are there any major problems involved in doing the retrofit? It appears that the color codes are the same with the exception of the wire to the CDI unit. (pulser coil) It seems to me that retrofitting the new oil control unit to the existing wiring on my engine would be much easier than changing my engine connectors to accept the new controller connectors. Is there anything I am overlooking??

Ed G.

Re: 1980's 150 Yamaha Oil Controllers

Is Rodbolt or Ray Neudecker around??

I have now been contacted by boats.net parts that the older oil controller is not unavailable, however, is on backorder at Yamaha. They said that there will be some delay before I receive the correct controller. They didn't indicate the length of time that "some delay" could be. My boat has been offline for too long already!!!

I still would like to know if retrofitting the newer oil controller is possible. It appears to me that the only real difference between the new controller and the old controller are the cable connectors and the wire to the CDI. (pulser coil) I am not sure what the pulser coil in the CDI does. My manual references the pulser coil but doesn't explain the pulser coils function, at least I can't find it in the manual. Color codes are the same. I don't have the newer controller's schematic relative to the post 1984 engines, so I can't determine if there is some show stopping electrical differences. I wouldn't think that there would be. The new connectors seem to be for ease of installation on later engines. Thanks in advance for your replies!!

Re: 1980's 150 Yamaha Oil Controllers

From the homework you have done, I belive you should be able to make the newer one work. My disclaimer is that I have never seen a 1984 model 150. I do know that there were some difference in the electronics. From discussions with others looking for a flywheel for one of them, I do know the flywheel pick up is 90 degrees out from the later models and the pulsor coil is different. The other electronics will interchange with the later models. There were very few of those models sold in this country. That was the first model imported by Yamaha. the difference in the pulsor coil was one of timing location, not an electronic difference. I guess you are the guinea pig who will have to let us know the outcome. Good Luck and sorry I couldn't help more.

Re: 1980's 150 Yamaha Oil Controllers

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the quick comeback. It looks like I will not be the guinea pig. Boats.net has assured me that they can get the earlier oil controller, (backordered) so I am sending the newer one that I received back to them for credit. Their on-line parts lookup system is kind of misleading! (PN 6E5-85740-02-00 (old #) This part has been replaced by 6E5-WS857-00-00 and may be substituted (Description))

What does the pulser coil do?
