Hello, I have a 1981 Evinrude 9.9. The water is just trickling out of the telltale, I replaced the pump last fall so I droped the lower and it looks fine. Water is running out where you can see the shift shaft just above where the lower comes off, I'm thinking the upper gromet is shot. Do I need to remove the powerhead to replace this? Thanks for your help.

Yes to your question but start by running some weed whacker string up the tell tale. Often time the hose gets plugged up. Is your engine running hot? You can also (with the leg dropped ) hook a garden hose to the water tube and give things a good flush. If all else fails, then check the upper grommet. Best of luck. Rick.

Thanks Rick, my luck its the upper gromet. I dont't know if its running hot. Last time I used it about a month ago it was fine. I was running some stable through it for winter on the earphones and noticed it wasn't "peeing" good.I'll try what you said. Thanks. Are there any good posts here on powerhead removal?

also have a good look at the intake screen behind the prop, as it sometimes can become restricted.

Your getting way ahead of yourself. 99.7% of the time the pisser is simply clogged. If you've got an air line and nozzle - pushing some back into the hole - even when running - is the quickest method to clear it 95% of the time. For the 5% see rick's post above.

Did you use the whole kit or just an impeller. A good pump housing seal (to driveshaft 0318972 ) is important and constantly neglected.

I used a whole kit even though the old one looked good, should I RTV seal under the metal plate of the water pump?

You guys were right! Took the lower back down and blew air through the water pick up tube, put it back together and "pees" fine. Only problem is now I don't have reverse so I guess I need to adjust the shift rod postion. Thanks for all your help!

No reverse with the engine running? It could be you didn't get the shift rod all the way home in the coupling. Glad to here your stream has recovered. Rick.

+100 - Please do NOT adjust the shift rod.

Simply get it seated properly. FYI - if you have a couple of slightly longer 1/4-20 bolts, use 2 bolts to hold the lower unit in place temporarily while you fiddle with getting the shift shaft and coupler together. You'll want the bolts tightened enough to keep the water tube in place, while leaving adequate room for the shift rod connection work.

Occasionally the coupling needs to be spread apart a "hair" - don't over due it as it can be cracked if you get ridiculous.

I'm glad the overboard indicator is working properly, but you did not need to remove the lower. The air nozzle is placed over the "pisser" nozzle and shot into it - the reverse of the flow.

Doing the air treatment while running works well, because the push in (air), push out(cooling water) does an excellent job of flushing the block port/hose/overboard fitting.
