Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

I've had several Lowrance/Eagle units over the past several years. Currently own both an LMS 520 and LMS 522. Pretty easy to navigate and fairly intuitive to operate.

The one knock on Lowrance is the wait time to get thru for a tech...

Furuno units, altho expensive, seem to have a very loyal following.

Glad it worked out for you. I am getting ready to do the same carb swap, and am curious as to where you found your fuel line set up. Any hints as to where you got it?

You can go to any auto parts store and ask for a steel fuel line. Depending on your fitting, fuel pump & carb, you'll ask for a double flare fuel line or they won't pull up tight and leak like a sieve. I made two 90 curves in the line and it fit perfectly. Make your bends around something that won't kink the line. I used a large piece of PVC pipe. Gotta change mine out first chance I get cause I had to wrap a lot of PFE Teflon tape around the ends so it would pull up tight into the fittings.

"SUCCESS!" The above oil filter wrench, along with a block of wood and pry bar, was able to persuade it to break free. Now if my oil filter relocation kit would get here.

Well the relocation kit came in and it won't work. I guess marine engines are different from Chevy engines. I just went ahead and put the new filter on and will live with it for now. Once I got the old filter off I could see where it had rusted to the block and the last owner put it on "way" too tight. Next time it will be easier to remove.

Who knows how many hours of engine operation before the next oil & filter change is due? Couldn't find straight 40W oil, for Florida temperature range, so I used Shell 15W-40 Rotella-T. Thanks

I decided on the Lowrance HDS-7 with the 83/200w transducer. I liked the side scan and the possible plug and play upgrades. I just ordered it on Ebay for $943.

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

I can feel your frustration in these posts and pics..

just "finished".....

(Ya right..you're NEVER finished w/ these restore jobs..there's always a 'gotcha" waiting as soon as you think you're finally done..)...

...........mine..(project/restore).

my 3 week project took a year as well..and while not perhaps as in depth as yours..definitely as aggravating..in most cases..

you HAVE to name her.."Raw Persistence"...cuz that's all that gets us thru w/ some of these projects...lol..

5 trips on the Bay up here in NH recently (and finally) ..and noticed each trip I had to run the bilge pump longer and longer..today I found 2 holes in the bottom..pouring water I put in thru bow vent w/ a garden hose searching for leaks..while on trailer..faster than the 90 hp outboard can "pee"..

previous owner covered them w/ silastic and they were up out of sight..constant water from the recent trips wore the silastic off and.. voila'.. fresh leaks!..and he told me she was 'dry as a bone'...[never seen any other alum. boat dry as a bone......I should have known better!]

but we are so easily persuaded to believe what someone tells us when we look at "that" boat for "that" money ...and see ourselves at the helm......relaxing.....a scotch and water ready to sip next to us in the cup holder..radio soothing our favorite oldies..good cigar in our fingertips..recalling the outpouring of internet supporters and glowing in the bright light over our heads for a job well done..as we slowly troll by the fishermen on the bridges..

and then...back to reality...and back to work...fishing on hold...cuz in my case..like yours.."she" decides that since you're finished w/ the boat..now is the time to get her honey-do list started up again!

won't go into details about my restore..just wanted you to know what a pleasure it was to me and so many others..to follow along and share your triumphs and setbacks..

my fix will be a band aid for my leaks..some wire brush on the end of a drill and some JB weld..our soft water season here is so short..then we wrap em up nice and warm to get thru our hard water season..and after a years worth of work w/ every spare minute..I want to fish! so a bandaid repair will do for now..

Thanx again for taking the time and effort to share with us....by allowing us to come along with you on the journey to where you are today..thanks to friends and family..as well..and in so doing..sometimes embarassing us to "keep on keepin' on" ..our own projects... when we ran into problems/funding/surprises and 'gotcha's"..and all the other things life throws at us..in between..

Congratulations and best wishes for your future enjoyment..

and may all your "Gotcha's"...be fixable with band-aids!

Thanx again for sharing..

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Thank you very much "Oldnhbuck" for the very nice post concerning my efforts. There have been two or three members who have really pushed me on to get back out there and "get-r-done." It was just a short time ago that I was ready to throw in the towel, give up and sell her for anything I could get. There was about 10 months that I didn't even do a single thing to it due to my frustration level. Then my wife said, "what are you going to do with the boat?" I then new it was either going to be a yard ornament or a financial loss. I paid $3300 for her and "thought" I would only have to put another $1500 in her to get it going. "WRONG!" I now have $14000 in her. It may still be a financial loss when and if I should decide to sell her but for now I feel that I have a sturdy, safe and hopefully reliable craft. My advice to anyone who doesn't have boating knowledge, like myself, is to find someone who can give you good advice on what it might take to get it on the water. "Experience cost" and I just paid my dues! Thanks again, Ron

LX Kid,

What oldnhbuck said X2. It really was enjoyable following you along with your project. You have proved persistence pays off. It?s time to enjoy your boat.

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Thanks guys! Just got back, this morning, from a very nice boat ride with my granddaughter. Guess we rode about ten miles around the bay and the boat worked "GREAT!" Not a hi-cup, studder or belch and idled "sweet" every time! The temp stayed 140 degrees, the oil pressure was at 40 psi and no leaks. I do have to tell on myself though. I made the stupid act or forgetting to put the transom plug in when launching! (Like no one else has done this before!) But I discovered it before it left the trailer and pulled her right back out. (Good save.) Now I have to start doing something with the cuddy cabin and corner wiring cover under the helm. Find speakers, AM/FM radio, cuddy cushions and figure out how I can rehab the ceiling and walls. SOUNDS LIKE MORE MONEY!!!!

.."Raw Persistence"...Might be a good boat name. Have to think on it.

Front and rear bilge pumps are new with auto switches. 500 gph in the front bilge and 1500 gph in the rear bilge. I just went by my U-Haul Storage unit and picked up my fishing gear! Bet everyone knows what I'm going to do. (Hey Hey) My son-in-law is looking around for his scuba tanks and spear guns. Couldn't have done any of this without his support.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I was planning to hit the auto parts store and do just what you said, but if there was one "off the shelf" that would work, I was going to go with it.

I've been following along for quite some time, and you project is looking great.

If your going with a Edelbrock and your engine is a Mercrusier 228 there are not off the shelf fuel lines. It's really easy to bend to fit.

Way to go Ron!! I sure am glad I hadn't written you off! Looking great, and I bet the girls just love a ride out with Papaw....

Looks to be a stable fishing platform as well. If you and Gene are looking for some spots a tad offshore, let me know.

Did someone say a name for here should be Miss Persistence??...;)

Thanks for the extra pic Ron. I have the Merc 260, so I have shift linkage on the fuel line side of the carb to deal with. No worries though...I bought some copper line this evening, took it slow making my bends, and it came out fine. Now I just have to figure out a throttle cable bracket!

My son put the stripes back on today. "STILL NO BOAT NAME! The old boat name was "Triple Option" and don't know what that meant to the former owner.
