I purchased a boat two weeks ago with a 1982 mariner inline 6 115hp. I took it to the lake and it ran good for about 5 mins. It bogged down and hasent ran good since. It will idle good until 200 rpms and then it starts missing. Since then i have rebuilt the carbs and changed the plugs. When i give it throttle it bogs down at about 3000 rpms. I have ran a compresson check and all cylinders have 100 pounds of compresson. This motor also set for five years. I drained and cleaned all the old fuel out. I ran some test on the stator wires and they dont look go for the bottom switch box. My manual says the the stator is bad. Would some one have any other ideas for me to try?

Welcome to iboats!!

Have you tried priming the fuel bulb when it bogs down? If that helps then the fuel pump needs a rebuild. Just a thought.

If you are losing the high speed winding on half your stator, when you would lose spark on either the odd or even number cyls. The eidst thing to do is disconnect the bias witre between the 2 switch box and test the engine. If it runs alright then, one box has a shorted bias, Mercury says to replace both boxes, Rapair says if it's has there boxes on it replace only the bad one. If it still is dropping 3 cyls. then switch the blue and blue/white and the red and red/white wires on the boxes, if the same 3 cyls still have no spark it's a bad box, if the spark goes to the other 3 cyls. then it's the stator

If the stator resistances are not in spec, the stator is bad, period. Time to pull and replace. Diagnose what you can now, then troubleshoot any further issues, if any, after stator replacement.

Just did 2 burnt-out stators in the last 2 weeks, a lot of that going around!
