I have a 1961 Crestliner Chieftain V-hull, which had a 1971 Force on it. I recently replaced it with a 1985, 85hp Force, model 856X7A, Serial #1331. I cleaned out the carbs, added a new battery and cables, and fired it up in a tub of water. I know nothing about it's history or it's hours, but it runs great! It throws water out the ports, so I figure the impeller and water pump must be ok.

A few questions on setup:

This boat is so old, it never had a temp guage or tachometer installed.

1. What should the orange temp wire hook up to at the front of the harness? A temp horn? If so, anyone have a picture of one of those, or a part number? I vaguely remember finding one of those behind the control cables just aft of the throttle control, but it wasn't hooked up as I recall. Assuming the horn I have in the project box is that temp horn, how would i test it?

2. I read through the forums, and it looks like this engine uses a 20 pole tach. Is that a single-wire pickup on the back of that, connecting to the purple harness wire? Can anyone confirm that that 20 pole tach for sale on this site will work in this setup?

3. How vital is it to have either of these things installed prior to setting out on the lake?

4. Is there something else I'm missing engine-wise, before I head out to the lake for a test run, something else I should consider doing before I head out?

Incidentally, I do have the manual on this engine, but the wiring diagram doesn't appear to cover the temp or tach setup at the front end.

Thanks,
Rich

I have a 1984 85 hp Force.
I needed a 20 pole Tach, and yes, it is the purple wire that has a push on clip already on it.
I don't know about the other wire. I know that they are both important, but the temp one is more so. I bought a Teleflex off EBAY for my boat.

Have fun, hope this helps some.

Thanks, pewter. Quick question: is there only one hookup on the back of the tach gauge? IF there's a second, is it just a ground? I'm working up from nothing since this never had a tach in it.
-Rich

Got the same motor, just added a tach as well. Yes it is the purple wire, my tach had that and a ground....The heat indicator should be the orange wire. If the wiring hasnt been messed with there should be an orange wire somewhere in/under the dash. I know mine is color coded all the way from motor to dash......

Your motor is a 1987 according to the model number.

Warning buzzer is Mercury part number F5H043 $35, but I think you can pick up a 12v buzzer pretty cheap at Radio Shack.

Yes you need a 20 pole tach.
A tach is needed to monitor engine performance and to determine what prop to use.

A water pressure gauge is also a good idea. It will let you know if you are going to overheat, before you actually do the damage.

Test your heat sensor by removing it from the motor head.
Check for continuity, should be none.
Heat it up in a pan of water, switch should close by the time it reaches 180*, and should have continuity now.

"".....so I figure the impeller and water pump must be ok.""

Don't bet on it. Keep a close eye on it. It could fail at any moment.
Replace it soon, then you know how old it is.

if you have the opportunity to put your new battery under the console with a switch, this might be a good time to consider it. Assumming that you have such a place and that it stays dry then your battery corrosion will drop to zero and your battery lifespan will be much longer. best of all, you'll never be the guy stuck at the marina trying to wire brush your battery terminals or asking for a jump start. for cabling, buy a set of super heavy duty jumper cables and eight big bronze/brass solder lugs. Use a propane torch with resin-core solder to put terminals on.

downside is that moving two batteries forward from stern is a big shift in weight. The boat may go slower on plane. upside to shift in weight is that more of the vee cuts water and your ride might be smoother.

Hookups on the tach were.
1 for power
1 for ground
1 for the light
1 to the motor Purple wire.
