I have a 1961 Crestliner Chieftain V-hull, which had a 1971 Force on it. I recently replaced it with a 1985, 85hp Force, model 856X7A, Serial #1331. I cleaned out the carbs, added a new battery and cables, and fired it up in a tub of water. I know nothing about it's history or it's hours, but it runs great! It throws water out the ports, so I figure the impeller and water pump must be ok.

A few questions on setup:

This boat is so old, it never had a temp guage or tachometer installed.

1. What should the orange temp wire hook up to at the front of the harness? A temp horn? If so, anyone have a picture of one of those, or a part number? I vaguely remember finding one of those behind the control cables just aft of the throttle control, but it wasn't hooked up as I recall. Assuming the horn I have in the project box is that temp horn, how would i test it?

2. I read through the forums, and it looks like this engine uses a 20 pole tach. Is that a single-wire pickup on the back of that, connecting to the purple harness wire? Can anyone confirm that that 20 pole tach for sale on this site will work in this setup?

3. How vital is it to have either of these things installed prior to setting out on the lake?

4. Is there something else I'm missing engine-wise, before I head out to the lake for a test run, something else I should consider doing before I head out?

Incidentally, I do have the manual on this engine, but the wiring diagram doesn't appear to cover the temp or tach setup at the front end.

Thanks,
Rich
