Got all vegitation out of boat yesterday....found soft spot in center of floor towards the front. I also noticed some compression cracks on the cap where the top boat motor mounts are....maybe be soft but could maybe be from over tightening.. going to pull carpet and interior today and take pics.

That's probably from a swollen waterlogged/rotten transom.

There will be rot below the deck at the soft spot and probably more widespread than just the soft spot.

... but it's all fixable, just gut the hull and build her back like new. You'll have the proud satisfaction of knowing your boat was fixed right by you and a job well done!

I've been told the boat is pretty fast. Got carpet up...found some holes in floor. Haha guess the carpet was the only thing holding me

I'm going to drill transom to check for soggy wood...your probably right jig rub but I'm in the denial stage right now.

That boat will be a lot faster and lighter with all new dry wood and foam in it.

The good thing about rotten wood is that it's easier to remove than half rotten wood.

My '86 1600 was also a disaster when I got it...been stored outside for years and years, but I drilled the transom and stringers and it was all good. You never know.

So as you can see the only thing holding me up in some places was the carpet. Kind of scary how this stuff deteriorates. Anyway Definitely going to be putting in a new floor, float boxes, and foam. Going to cut off the floor and see where we stand on the stringers and transom. Going to also be looking at ways to make more storage because there is none on this boat. I'm hoping the front seat area is not full of foam and can maybe double as storage for vests and such.

The engine was a bright spot because it spun freely, had good compression, no leaks, lower lube was good, plugs looked OK, and shifter worked. Only problem is my carburetor is missing. I will have to track that down through the family. Battery even looked nice but will probably be replaced anyway after build.

Couple of questions though: Where is the cheapest place to buy foam, glass, and resin? local or internet?

Is it possible to update the gauges to a newer set? Will they be compatible with the older motor?

Whats the best way to clean some of this mold off the plastic windshields? Or do people just replace them?

For foam, glass, and resin it's hard to beat USComposites prices online and they're based in Fla. too so you should get a very quick delivery time.

Urethane Foam , Expanding Marine Polyurethane Foam

New gauges shouldn't be a problem, check out the iboats store on this site.

Most people use the plastic headlight lens restore kit for the windshields, sold at Wal-mart and just about all automotive supply stores.

Search: starboard

You pay as much for a 12"x27" by 1/2" piece of starboard as you will for a 4'x8' sheet of plywood.

Holy Crap...Never Mind! I guess there is some pretty sweet products if you had an unlimited budget?! But like you said before plywood is great as long as it's sealed properly with CSM and Resin.

Quick question...I am ripping out the floor currently but I'm trying to understand why the consoles just free float off the cap? Why is there not a fiber glassed piece of wood connecting the consoles to the floor. The only thing holding up my consoles in the middle were interior pieces that just free floated on the floor.

The only thing I can figure is that if you glassed it to the floor it may crack when the hull flexes? Let me know because when I start redoing everything I would really like to do away with as much vinyl as possible and that is one of the places i would like to glass.

Cheap construction.

I don't see a problem with glassing them to the deck other than not being able to remove them completely for better access under the consoles.


I don't blame you about that sissy, poofy, padded vinyl junk... it's just something else to retain moisture and spread mildew growth!

As a matter of fact I'm thinking about removing padded pedestal seats in my boat and using folding steel chairs instead.:lol:

Haha!! I don't think I'd go to that extreme. I do fear mold and clean up though so I'm thinking less vinyl more glass and paint. I am a Automotive Body/Paint guy by trade and I have painted boats on the side before. I always liked the clean white look of a fresh marine paint job. I'm just going to put padded seats and pads around the rail on the inside and no carpet anywhere. So there will be a lot of finish work making everything look nice.

Half rotten wood is a pain to remove. The rest just peels off like mulch :thumb:

So much for putting extra storage up front ! both bow seat boxes are filled with flotation foam! I was hoping to make hatches for storage but I guess I can't since I'll have to put foam back right?

Boat manufacturers are, you are not. I dug it out on my 1600...lots of room under them. Just know that the boat's going down if its swamped...
