In this thread I got advice on a tricky reinstall of my gearcase, then I found the remains of part of the lower driveshaft housing seal stuck up in the receiving splines:

dubs283 advised removing the rest of the old seal with a 2-jaw puller, but I was not able to find a 2-jaw puller of a size that I could get up in there. I did find this tool though- it seems to be ideal for removing the seal. The fact that it's called a seal puller was a big clue .

Is this the right tool for this particular job? What's the best way to knock the new seal in without damaging the seal or scratching up the inside of the driveshaft housing? I know this is pretty easy stuff for you guys, and it's not like it's my first impeller replacment- I replaced the impeller on my OB motor on my other boat a couple times. But this "simple" impeller replacement has become more difficult than I thought it would be and I'm second-guessing myself- don't want to screw up the outdrive before I even get this boat I just bought on the water...

1inch or so 1/2 drive socket, long extention, install socket backwards on extention, drive seal in.

Isn't that just the O-ring from the top of the vert drive shaft?

i used a seal puller like this to remove that seal..
http://www.matcotools.com/Catalog/vehicle-service/wheel-and-brake/seal-and-bearing-tools/ second item down...

then i used a small block of wood to carefully reinstall the new seal.
ya might look for a seal groove on the drive shaft also. mine has it. i reinstalled the seal at a slightly different location than it was to start with. best i can see after a couple years. i was successful. i see a new shinny spot starting right next to the original groove i assume from where the new seal is riding at.

imho it looks like the inside part of the seal that rides on the drive shaft only. it broke away from the outer part of the seal that locates it in the drive by friction.

i know this was brought up before too. but imho i also believe ya don't have to install that o ring at the top of the mc-1 drives. my proof that it isn't needed is that as mc-1 kept getting revised through the years, up to alpha1. the o ring groove on the drive shaft was removed and there was no where to put an o ring at.. i've been running mine for 4 or 5 years now w/o that o ring w/o ramifications that i'm aware of...

Bt Doctur- yeah, a socket on an extension crossed my mind too, good tip! Great minds think alike, eh. I used a sparkplug socket to knock in races on trailer hubs on a few occasions. But I wasn't sure of using a socket in the DS housing...I was also thinking of a block of wood like ziggy recommended..I think the socket on the extension would work the best, i'll keep an eye on it.

cr2k, the o-ring was present and accounted for- that was definitely the rubber part of the lower DS housing seal.
