One other thing on the carbs. the orignal had a solid gasket under the plate on the side. The vacuum would suck the gasket into the passage. You cut the old style gasket with razer blade, or buy new gasket.

OK. I tried smaller idle bleed orifices, but I went too small and I couldn't bring the idle up to where it needs to be, so I put the old ones back in. If I get time, I'm going to drill them out so they are just .004" smaller than what is in there now.
I removed the check valve from the tank, and discovered that someone had removed the check ball and spring. I installed a new check valve in the tank, only to discover that the the primer bulb was unable to provide enough suction to lift the check ball off the seat. This caused the primer bulb to collapse when I attempted to pump it up. This wasn't working, so I put the old fitting with the check ball removed back in.
I rerouted the fuel line so it did not dip down into the bilge, and now it stays roughly parallel with the top of the tank. I don't know if that helped at all, and the line for the other engine is not like that, and runs fine, but I did it just because.
I then did the idle timing and WOT timing adjustment using the procedure in one of the stickies on this forum. It was some better, but still hard starting in neutral. I finally misadjusted the timing cam roller and it is much better. If I'm on a short drift, it will restart by just turning the key. If it sits for a longer period, I sometime have to take it out of gear, and advance the throttle, but that is a very minor inconvenience. I'll play with it more when I haul the boat for the season, but for now I'm good.
Thanks to everyone that gave their input, especially Clanton. If I didn't know about the carb problem on the 1986 engines, I'd still be chasing this.

The small bore 2.7 225 which you have is a bridged exhaust engine and these can scuff pistons and still some great compression. The recirc sytem on the 86/87/88 models suck and really dont work too well, you can make it better by venting the bottom bearing like the later engines and you will be suprised how well it idles and takes off. When you restart it does it smoke alot?

I wouldn't say the 1986 smokes more than the 1988 sitting next to it, but they both smoke pretty good when you start them. I guess they both suffer from the same design flaw.
What is involved in venting the bearing? These aren't things you find in the repair manual.

I have an 89 200 looper and was having the same problem as you. I ended up completely removing the vro and installed an electronic fuel pump. I know everyone on here will say that is not a good idea, but is working great for me. I tried to premix the fuel and still run it through the VRO pump with the VRO connections unplugged and oil inlet plugged like everyone on here says to do and had the same problem. To see if this will work, run a line directly to the inlet hose going to the splitter for the carbs and pump your ball while the engine is under a load( on the water). if it runs fine untill the fuel is used up, the VRO is the problem.
