Hi,
This motor is the water cooled model made by Eska, 1986.

When I got the motor a couple of weeks ago, owner told me it needed a carb rebuild. Put it in the test barrel and it started right up, so I put the boat out on the lake to test her out. She jumped up on plane and ran about 1/4 mile, and then died. Had to keep squeezing the bulb to keep her going.

Got the rebuild kit, and cleaned and swapped out the parts. Started her up, but she ran rough. Kept stalling.

Anyway, on a whim, while the motor was laying down, controls up, I choked her and pulled the cord - VROOM! Excitedly, I put her it the tank - NOTHING.

Laid her back down, and she ran smooth as silk. I lifted her up without putting her in the barrel - NOTHING!

What could be causing this? Bad float switch?

I don't know much about outboards, so all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Generally if squeezing the primer bulb helps it indicates a bad fuel pump not a carb problem. Some of those have the pump in the carb others seperate. Be sure you have it assembled right check that the float valve opens and closes.Be sure all filters and connections are good and tank vent is open.

Yes, the carb rebuild fixed that problem. No need to squeeze the bulb anymore.

This one is different. When the engine is laying down, it runs great. Stand it upright, and it dies within a few seconds.

I'm thinking that's got to be the float, right?

I would say without a doubt the float is messed up.

What size and kind of boat are you pushing with that 15er? I have one too but I have not had it out on the water yet. I am still renovating my boat. In that 1/4 mile, she had some nuts? Just a little worried if it will plain my 14 fiberglass. I have been told that it should do it without any problem, but I certainly will not win any races!

Thanks!
