here's the deal. I have a 1986 120hp johnson with looper carbs that is not running right. when I push in on the key to choke it the engine starts but dies. If I start it with the choke and open the throttle wide open the boat will jump right on plane and run fine. It does fine after that. I can bring it down to a idle and it will idle fine, But if I try to take off again it will spit and sputter then die.
I don't think it matters but it has a jet foot on it. The boat sat for about a year. I rebuild the carbs the way the book said. I cleaned every little hole on them and replaced all the o-rings. I also replaced the fuel pump. Thanks for any help guys

If you have to use the choke you have a fuel delivery problem. You said you rebuilt the carbs, did you remove and clean all three jets in the carb. You must have cleaned the high speed but what about the idle air bleed and the intermediate jets?

I used wire and clened all the hole I could find. The one thing I didn't do is clean the hole on the butterfly plate. Not sure what it is called. But I'm talking about the plate the carbs bolt to. Thanks for the help

Re: 1986 johnson 120hp dies with out choke

I got the boat from a friend that had not used it in over a year. I changed the fuel line, fuel pump( from vro to the pump that looks like a house) and all hoses.

A buddy of mine said that I mite have put the carbs on in the wrong place. He said some of the early looper motors had different jet in the carbs that need to go back where they came off of. I'm not sure that I put them back where I took the off of.
If that is true can some one tell me what carbs go where? Thanks for the help.

I went out and was check some of the thing you guys told me. I replaced the plugs. Then I took a can of carb cleaner and sprayed it in each idle jet(lower one). On all the carbs but one it would push gas out the main jet. I took the carb off and ran a in the tube for that jet. Got it cleaned out and put the carb on. As soon as I bumped the key with no choke it started right up. It now idles smooth. I will be taking the boat for a ride today. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help
