Re: 1986 ss 201

Thanks Guys, Starman I got married in a corduroy suit that color ten years before this boat was built, lol. In side is going to wait till the water freezes over again. I am waiting for a carb kit and couple other parts to get her ready for a sea trial, then put her away.

Wow, Glen...I agree with everyone else excellent find and worth the drive. The paint came up real nice. I can remember wearing corduroy pants that matched my jacket...lol. I wonder if that will ever come back in style?:D

Thanks, even if they came back in style I think I would have a hard time wearing them, yeachhhhh

It has rained here a whole lot the last five days and shut down all the roads to oil field traffic, so yesterday was a mud day so to speak!!. I have noticed over the last few days a real nasty smell in the hanger, so I decided to look over the interior a little and may be take a couple core samples to check the spary foam flotation. For some reason the brand new tires had some bad wear on them and negative camber. Well I started in the rear corners under the jump seats, not too bad, the plywood deck was real damp. The tougne
weight seemed fairly high to me so I moved up to the area just in front of the counsuls, drilled a hole and using a four foot piece of
1 3/4" exhaust tubing I pushed it down into the foam to the bottom of the hull 22"from the top of the floor!!!! The bottom 6"were dripping wet, yikes. I took my skill saw and cut an access hole 2' long by 18"wide and went in with a long handled garden spade. I now know why the tougne weight and the wear on the tires, once I got to the bottom it was like digging a well the hole kept filling with water. I have a small 110 volt sub pump I dropped in to pump the water out. I then cut the two foot wide strip out, right back to the engine, and oh the smell. They even spray foamed in the fuel tank!! The foam goes right to the bottom of the hull over the ribs and covering all the limber holes, absolutley no way for water to drain. I'm really wondering about a sea trial now?? I will post up some photos later.

That's a bummer, that foam can hold a lot of water and cause lots of problems. It was used extensively in the commercial fishing vessels holds for insulation purposes here on the coast of BC. But small holes punctured in the fiberglass shell that was laid over the foam resulted in water penetration and rot in the wooden hulls.

Glen, there was a lot of discussion on another forum about below deck aluminum tank corrision. That was due to slight gaps between the foam and the tank, this allowed condensation to form on the tank. The results were corroded fuel tanks that leaked into the surrounding foam.

This happened to many high-end fibre glass manufactured boats that cost considerable time and money to fix. That is why the spray in foam must be in contact with the fuel tank. Guys talked about installing plastic tanks under decks so that this did not happen again.

Is yours a plastic or aluminum tank? Food for thought

FNm ya the foam sucks big time, what a stink under there. The fuel tank is aluminum and completley glued in with foam, I have been trying to formulate a plan in my little brain to get it out of there. once I do I will check it real close for corrosion.

Re: 1986 ss 201

five gallons of xylene or acetone. cover top of boat with alum foil to keep it from evaporating. let it sit in sun for a day then pressure wash out the sludge.
just kidding....i know how pricey xylene is. but something akin to this might help for small areas you can't get clean otherwise.

it;s really a shame that the stuff absorbs water. in a tin boat, there is something to be said for why SC put the stuff in there in the first place, which is sound/vibe/resonance damping and noise control and stiffening hull..........

Hey B2, wouldn't that be a toxic cloud yuk. Ya I'm not sure what they were thinking when they designed that foam.'Trying to figure out how to get the furl tank out, as it is foamed inbetween the stringers and two bulk heads real tight.???

I wouldn't mind seeing some pictures of how you are accessing this area around the gas tank. Is this the factory location and something the factory did?

Great find Glen! That 201 cleaned up very nice.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Hey guys! (slight hijack, sorry), I really like the bow rails on Glen's boat and want to have a set made like them for mine. Glen, can you post a pic of the aft fitting? And how tall is that middle stanchion? I'd be awesome if someone could chime in as where to get the same fittings. It seems where I look, all the stanchions are short.

Thanks!

Hey DJ, I will post up some pics of the bow rail and measurements later today.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Okay so here is the mess. Like I said I opened up the bow area first, there is still two and a half inches of water in there.

Then I cut out the center section over the fuel tank and old ski locker.

Here is the fuel tank Aluminum 43 gal

And how it is foamed in!!!!!

The section next to the stringer on the starboard side.

Big boats require a different selection of tools to strip.

The SB side with some foam removed.

wetfoam007.jpg

It looks like they poured some foam then set the tank in and added a wood cleat above the tank on both ends bolted to the bulkheads, then they poured foam down the sides. All this foam is completley saturated, ( can you imagine what the inside of this would be like if it was a Glasser ). The area out side the stringers is also saturated up about an inch off of the hull all the way down the starboard side. This has caused the floor to buldge up approximatly 1/2 to 3/4 off an inch, pulling the rivets through the ply. One thing I have noticed with this boat is the stringers are not fastened to the cross ribs like all the other SS's I have worked on, but riveted right to the hull with half moon cut outs over the ribs.

Any ideas on getting the tank out would be appreciated:confused:
By the way the tank is half full, I guess I will have to start by emptying that.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Memories!....Looks just like mine did, except mine wasn't wet and my tank wasn't foamed in. Wait until you see whats under that tank, you'll be able to spread it around your trees and flowers. When removing my foam I made a foam saw out of a piece of 1/4 x 3/4 aluminum, cut some teeth into it, and bent it into an "L". I'd "saw" down the stringers and then used a spade shovel to pop out chunks, pretty much like your doing. That boat must have say outside uncovered for a long time?

Thanks for getting the bow rail pics.....

Hey DJ, ya not a lot of fun. Here are the photos of the bow rail, Seadog carries some similar fittings. The rear fitting is called a blend fitting and is a solid round piece of aluminum cut a steep angle.

I was actually digging some foam too buddy:facepalm:

Hey, stringers riveted through the hull, interesting. I'm betting that makes for a stiffer set up eh?

Yur rails look like they are in excellent shape!

Re: 1986 ss 201

i think it would stiffen the hull at the risk of adding more through-rivets to leak. one other trick i use for cutting foam, esp the new stuff i want to reinstall, is an old butcher knife and pushbutton start propane torch....heat the blade and it cuts like butter. just do it outside or have good ventilation cuz of the fumes from the melting foam.
