I have been working on a complete restoration of an astroglass fish and ski that was given to me for a couple of weeks. Been scouring these forums and boy have they helped. So far I have removed the floor, cap, rotted transom, and all the rotted wood in the bilge area. I have cut, glued, and fiberglassed the rear support pieces in and was about to tab the transom in. I then realized some of the core wood of the strakes? Was rotten. Standing on them from the inside of the boat they have no give and the wood is less than 1/4” thick. I’m wondering if the fiberglass they are covered with is the actual support and the core was was just a mold. Here are some pictures for reference. There are 8 strakes that run from the transom to about 8’ forward. Then there are 4 that run up towards the bow.

Hello, jahayes! I asked this very question of this forum last year, and I was told that for my boat, the strakes were not structural, at least no where's near comparative to stringers. I may be remembering incorrectly, but I believe that so long as you've remedies any holes/cracks/seepage that may be coming from the strakes, you're good.

Thanks for the reply. For the most part they are very solid. I would much rather just glass over them with 1708 than cut them out and replace the wood.
