In my opinion, drain holes are a great idea. As I remember, Friscoboater put them at every bulkhead or pretty much anywhere water could get trapped. They don't need to be huge - 3/8" drill bit, or maybe 1/2" drill bit if you have one.

The one you sketched, I would make even lower, going at a downward angle through the back and partially through the tank floor.

Once you cut it, get some resin in there to seal it up, and then gel coat it like the rest to make sure no water intrusion gets into the raw wood.

Yep I'd make the drain and make it 1" and use 3M5200 to glue in a piece of 1" pvc. Works Great!!

Wood & Struc

Thanks for the advise. I was think about the PVC route so that will work great. Can either one of you answer the question that was previous to the drain hole question? It's how do I repair the outside of the cut hull now that it has PB and 4 layers of 1708 on it. Thanks again!

Yes to the drain in the fuel cell.... I asked the same thing in my thread.... you want to know if your leaking fuel under the deck. If it drains to the bilge you'll smell it pretty quick ;)

As far as the hull outside repair......YD or Wood or oops! would be the best info you can get on that subject....Each gel repair is kinda it's own animal.... I best let the more knowledgeable gents reply to that fix ;)

This was in the stickys from YD on stress cracks.... It will be this sort of repair

Hello Iboats..

This is the second installment of DIY ..

Stress cracks..

http://s699.photobucket.com/albums/vv352/YachtDr/FW509/

Its as simple as the air void post I did..

1. grind/die grind out your repair to the glass ( these cracks went under the rubrail..so you have/should chase them ). I removed the RR for proper repair..

2. Clean and fill . The picture shows what I mix.. Cabosil/resin/fine cut up mat .. and a tad bit of blue gel to get the base "close" before spray..( kinda hard to spray those new low VOC gels that have poor pigmentation without having to make a mountain of gel to cover ).

3. Prep and sand till low "fair" .. you want your spray repair to be "low" .. I mean dish that baby out in your prep..you will "fill" it with gel coat..

4. Spray the Gel. ( used a preval on this one too ) .. 5 coats should do it.. .... .. .. I know some may say " naw..3 coats.." but in colors you want to spray 2 extra coats to sand off.

5. wait a day..

6. sand to 1200 grit and buff lightly on colored gel till blended ( harder buffing on the blend line )..

7. done..( might have to rebuff after a couple of weeks..do not over buff on 2 day old colored gel repair..just IMO).

* use a "patch aid" or some additive to thin your gel to spray .. not acetone. With colors I would use MEK. for the reducer.

YD.

That all looks great, & +1 on the drains/limber holes. As someone else also mentioned, seal the wood @ the inside of hole 1st, then 5200 some tubing.

Nice job on the Gelcoat! Lookout Memorial Day, SB89's headed to a nearby ramp for a re-launch!

Re: 1988 Sea Ray Seville Deck & Stringers

I got another question. I'm putting in the fuel tank either today or tomorrow. I've been kicking around the idea of putting a small drain hole in the bottom of the fuel deck. The deck will be sealed however, that is what makes me nervous. I won't know there is a problem until its too late with the fuel tank but if I have a small drain hole then I'll know if there is fuel leaking or water getting in somewhere. What does everyone think?????
The fuel line, vent tube and filling hose will sit a little higher on the deck. I'm going to add another inch to the decking area so I can enclose these lines. They will be sealed with 5200 or something like that so no water gets in. The dog house covers this area so it won't be a trip hazard.

This would be the spot

Your work is looking great. I was reading thru the thread and I guess I missed what you used for the black material that goes between the fuel cell and the tank.
Could you be so kind as to tell what you used.
I need to find something that dosen't cost a arm and a leg. (LOL)
Thanks Kent

Thanks JB. I'm looking to get this done by the first week of May. My daughter has a soccer tournament on the beach which backs up to the marina. Last year we brought our Jet Skies and played in between games but some of the families had their boat cruising around the marina having lunch. It look fun so that's what we are shooting for. Can't do anything tomorrow so Friday, I'll finish the cleats, put down the tank and see if my new fuel sender unit works:facepalm: and then start measuring for the deck. Saturday, lay glass on the bottom of the deck and then hopefully by Sunday have the deck at least PB in. Next week will be a mix of glassing, putting back the seat boxes, finishing the battery box and ice chest and then gel coat. I'm looking to detail and put in some electronics the following week before we head to the beach. We'll see if these great plans hold or not. I might just be happy with everything up to the gel coat. Can do the little stuff after we come back. Thanks again for all your help.

No problem. I stole the idea from Friscoboater. It's just the back side of a door mat that is made of recycled tire. I cut them equal and then laid them with PL. Just something to keep the tank off the deck. Once I got the information to put a drain hole. I recut them so they have a 1" split in the middle (now two separate parts) so the water will drain down the middle. Acts like a funnel. I didn't take any pictures but I can either tomorrow or Friday.

Good luck and thanks!

SB I just caught that you have rubber strips in the bottom of the fuel compartment.... I used a 1" wide 1/2" thick strips glued to the bottom of the tank with 5200.... The strips ran long ways with the tank to prevent damming of water.... Gluing the strips to the tank ensures a good seal and no water can get between the strip and the tank.....Moisture trapped between something and aluminum will cause corrosion resulting in pin holes...

I changed it up. I cut the strips in 2 leaving room so water could funnel down the middle. I'll put 5200 down and the relay the tank. Thanks for catching that.

Everything is looking good for you. That's 2 threads on SR's and both aiming for Memorial Day. I'd like to think I may be there as well, but things seem to be dragging at them moment. I set out to try and do bits in the evening. I managed 1 evening. The rest of the days I've been pulled in other directions.

THE DECK IS CUT!!!!! I'm standing on a firm and level deck!!!!!

You don't know how excited I am. I'm the guy who couldn't make a bird house square if my life depended on it. I was totally convinced that the deck was going to list to one side or the other.

NOPE! It is level!!!
IMG_0545.jpg

I made sure that the boat was level each day I was working on it whether it was on the street or my garage.

NICE! Great job buddy! I know that feeling of being able to stand on a flat deck instead of tripping around stringers and bulks.....Your getting very close to a splash!!

Re: 1988 Sea Ray Seville Deck & Stringers

To repair the cut on the outside...
Grind the area about 2" all around and feather to the center. Acetone wash.
Use 3 layers of CSM to create increasingly larger patches.
Smallest one goes down first. Wet out the area and then wet them all out at the same time on wax paper then apply as one uniform patch.
Mix some Gelcoat paste to match the color as best you can. Apply with bondo spreader to fair out the area.
Sand, buff and polish.
2 hour fix.

Thank you Wood. When I did that my heart sank. Thought I screwed it all up but again iboats to the rescue. "SB, it's all good. We've all done it. We'll have it fixed and no one will ever know". Thanks again Wood!
