Re: 1989 Starcraft Mariner MR18 CC Floor Replacement

I wish I had a more informed answer for you but I don't. I used a BassPro carpet adhesive on my Jupiter and it was terrible! Runny and soaked into the wood and failed in numerous places. However I ran a little short on the 88 and finished my vinyl (in the side pocket area) with some leftover Roberts 6700 carpet adhesive from Home Depot and it seemed to work just fine. So to summarize :p The Cabela's stuff may be worth checking out but if it seems runny, don't use it.

Thanks ezmobee. I think I'll play it safe and go with the nautolex88.

Jig: This is the photo that best shows my problem with the vent/gas line being in the way of a full-length crosspiece. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Here's a few shots of the plywood floor getting sealed with the West Systems epoxy prior to installation.

The wife claimed to be able to roll on the epoxy better than me.....so I told her "it's all yours" :)

Here's a shot of the first two pieces being dry-fit prior to sealing:

You don't want to coverup those 2 couplings do you Bag? It looks like there was an access hole for them in the old deck, and I'd leave access to them in the new deck too.

As far as additional framing at that break in the crossmember goes, you could run 2 false stringers back from that crossmember to the next crossmember back to frame in for additional support.

Something like this:

Forgive my crude paint skills.

It looks to like you should have an elevated deck in that bow area where the hoses and couplings are:

This would be easy to frame up out of aluminum angle and would hide your access to the couplings. It would also give you some below deck storage and you could probably even put a pedestal seat up there if you wanted to.

I'm not sure what you have planned, but this is just something I pictured in my mind.

Jig,

Yes. There was a 6" access plate at that location that have cut in to the new floor.

Yes. There is a casting platform that I removed (and will re-install) after laying the floor.

I don't think the false stringers will work as the front piece is a flimsy thin piece of aluminum that is attached to nothing other than the two pieces of flooring. Sorry for the crappy pic. The only support for that thin piece of aluminum is sitting perpendicular to the two stringers running the length of the boat. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Yup! Crap can those 2 pieces of flimsy angle (is that angle or just a flat strip?) and get 1 1/2" x 1/8" thick aluminum angle or flat bar stock to replace them with, then run the false stringers. When you fasten the decking to the false stringers and crossmember angle or flat stock it should tighten everything up nicely.

Nice work...are there any updates? Is the decking installed?

Thanks gardug!

Yes. The decking is installed and the vinyl secured. I am in the process of getting everything (console, side shelves, front casting deck, etc) re-installed back in the boat. Will post pics soon.
