Recently bought a 1990 Bayliner with a Force 50 hp outboard. The outboard started and ran well although the former owner said he had it turned as it had idle problems in the past. First time we had it out worked flawlessly we could start and stop at will on the lake, it was perfect. I had a bildge pump switch added at a local shop as there was none before only two clips to clip to the battery. The battery was left unhooked at one terminal so that had to be rehooked to start. Since then the motor will run fine after getting in gear but you need to start it several times before you can get in gear. It does not idle and will stall in neutral before we can get it in gear and give it gas. After several restarts it will idle and you can put it in gear and as long as you do not turn it off will run the gas out of the tank. It did one time shut down after getting started and in gear after going to full thottle. The former owner only had the boat out one time last year and maybe only once this season before we got it.

I have the same motor on an 89 Maxum and had the same issue. I just replaced the spark plugs and it's running a lot smoother, but not perfect yet.

Re: 1990 Force 50 hp start idle problem

Thanks Nick, Here is an addition, the last time we were out the motor started ran fine we could go down the lake at full throtle stop and fish start and run again no problem, did that several times. Then when we were leaving headed back and ran slowly into the no wake area for a good distance idled up to the dock for me to get out and get the truck/trailer and my son had trouble starting and when he headed toward the trailer the motor shut down and he was lucky enough to glide into the end of the trailer so I could reach the boat and pull it on the trailer. I wonder if maybe the carb is loading up under idle or low rpm and making it hard to run/start?

I am having the same exact issue on my 85. From all the threads I have been reading it seems 50HP Force motors have a lot of quirky fuel issues. I am going to rebuild my carb and play with adjustments. Plugs and wires are brand new, if this does not fix it I am moving on to the fuel pump.

I have a similar issue with my 93 force 120, it will start and warm a couple minutes but when i try to shift into reverse it stalls, will do this about 4-6 times then it will catch and run fine with stops/starts if I give quick throttle when shifting from nuetral, still trying to figure out myself.
