1991 evin crankshaft issues

After closely inspecting my crankshaft, i've discovered a few issues. First, there is a lot of rust in the bottom where the female splines are and also a small circular ring right beneath the seal housing...where the two seals meet. I've been told OMC changed that design starting in '92 and put a wear sleeve on the crank wear the seal housing rides. I put my lower unit shaft to see if the splines had good engagement. It holds, but my mechanic looked at it and said he wouldn't trust it. Is there any way to repair the splines in the crankshaft? Could i put a wear sleeve on it? I can't use a '92 or newer crank because mine has the square end as opposed to a keyway. Thanks for your input.

Ok, we're assuming you have a 60 degree motor. If not, then some of this might change.

The splines can be replaced. If nobody in your area is familiar with the proceedure, let me know and I'll get you the phone number of the guy who has always done it for us.

A small groove where the seal rides is not unusual. You can use a Speedy-sleeve if you like. most NAPA stores have a selection. Sometimes you can relocate the seal slightly instead.

Assuming you have a 1991 6V6 then you can indeed use the 1992 crank. Just use the 92 encoder wheel. My 150 is like that.

Actually thats a good combo. The 91 150-175 had the best port timing and the 92 and newer crank uses the encoder wheel with the brass hub. Its not unusual to break the 91 style wheel when removing it.

Good luck!

Re: 1991 evin crankshaft issues

Oh thank you very much!. Since i've got two of these, i was looking into a whole lot of money for two more. Whew! I've spent lots of $$ on parts to rebuild this one, not to mention the sweat and late evenings (after the wife and kids go to bed). I sure would like to get the splines replaced so i can start the rebuild. Oh, almost forgot, it is a 60 degree block. E150EXEIS/E150NXEIS. Thanks again.

Yep, thats a 6V6.

OK, if you need the splines changed call Tom at Roehrs Machine Shop at 941-955-5246. If you have a good 92 or newer crank just use that.

What else are you changing?

Check on the '92 crank as I believe at that time they changed driveshafts and crankshafts so the sealing oring is retained inside the crankshaft bore and not on the driveshaft like the '91 models did. You can use a '92 crank but will need a new driveshaft (2 piece kit) if I remember correctly.

I'm sure someone knows the changeover date for these motors.

Re: 1991 evin crankshaft issues

There appears to be a small groove in the crank where two of the seal rings ride. One groove underneath each seal ring. It's smaller than the seal ring so I'm puzzled how it got there. None of the other seal ring grooves have them. I've mic'd the seal rings at .155 (manual sez replace if less than .154) so i can't figure out what caused the grooves. Any ideas? If Tom can't fix this one, how about the ones at OCC in Wash ST.? Thanks again.
