I'm replacing the stator and trigger on my 1993 Mercury 60HP 2 stroke twin carb 3 cylinder outboard (serial number is OC161680). I have removed the fly wheel and the stator is now able to be removed (once the wires are disconnected off the switchbox), however, the mount that the flywheel bolts into (8 bolts) is still in the way to remove the trigger assembly. Is this mount removable or is there another way?

Hope you marked that flywheel so you know which way it goes back on the center hub!!!!

You can pull the center hub with an automotive-type harmonic balancer puller.

You'll need the appropriate-length 5/16" fine-threaded puller bolts. Be sure you get Grade 8 or better or the bolts might break.

Or, use the proper Mercury flywheel pulling tool which screws into the center hole then presses against the top of the crankshaft with a puller bolt.

Various places to get this tool, see the last post in this message thread for info:

When you reassemble the flywheel, be sure to use a drop of Red Loctite on each hub bolt and torque to 24 ft-lbs (you'll have to do the conversion to Newton-Meters, Mate!).

Yeah, I have marked all the pieces I removed (I was suprised to find that there wern't already markings from the factory).

Cheers for all that info. I've got a harmonic balancer puller, so should be able to get it off no dramas. I assume that it's on some sort of key or something to align it onto the crank shaft again.

The shaft is spined, with a flat spot machined in. Corresponding fit on the hub, it'll only go on one way.

Saw that this morning when I got it off.
Now I'm just waiting for the new stator and trigger to arrive from the USA so that I can put it all back together.
