Looking to buy this 1993 1700SR, Any advice, tips, precautions? Is it a good price or over priced? Thanks for the help!!

When you ask about price you have to keep in mind most people on this forum are not Canadian. Prices in the States are less, much less especially in the category of what you are looking for.

Early 90's i/o under 19' is typically considered a starter boat in the States and you will find boats like this in the $2000-5000 range and $5000 being on the high end.

Here, that is about par for the course if it is as mechanically sound as the owner claims it is.

You could offer under $6000 see what happens.

From your first post I thought you lived in Regina, you live in Calgary?

Ok. I know CAD prices are WAY WAY high, but that sure seems like a premium price for a boat with a worn out interior. Otherwise, it looks like reasonably taken care of older boat with a decent non-obsolete powerplant.

That sounds like a bit much.
Try offering less, like 4K, and work your way up. have a set price in your head, like 5500 is the most you want to spend. If he doesn't accept, just leave your offer open to him and walk, or find another boat. The fact that it needs some interior work is another reason to lowball.

Oh ya I guess thats true about cad and us prices. I am in regina and will be making a trip to calgary to get a boat. Regina is over priced on boats. At this point I am thinking of that 2003 Bayliner 175 for $8700. This will be $2000 difference and also a 10year difference. I emailed the Maxum owner and this is reply I got

I" have copy's of the work i have done in the 2 years i have owned it the gas gauge is not working and it is a sensor in the tank and not worth fixing. at this point the lowenst i will go on price will be 6000"

I'd walk from the Maxum, and continue your search. IMO, overpriced, it could become a headache in no time, and there could be other hidden problems. Not worth $6000.

I can say to you that my 2005 bayliner 175 is reliable. I've had nothing but good times with it, and nothing has gone wrong at all. But, it is a starter boat, and once you have 5 people or more on board it can get crowded. Light for towing too.
$8,700 isn't a bad price if it's in great shape and if nothing's wrong. But again, try going lower on the price if you can. I got mine for about $9000 with some accessories a year ago. Needed a nice cleaning due to the marine growth(what a surprise for when we got it out of the water for the first time ), and a new prop, but in good shape otherwise.

Looks a bit dirty on the left seat and in the bow walking area, but other than that looks like a nice buy.

If you do happen to look at it, look for soft spots in the floor and transom. Make sure everything works properly (Blower, bilge pump, horn, navigation lights, etc.) Starting it on muffs doesn't diagnose much if there is a problem because there isn't a load on the engine, so a test ride on the water would be good too if he allows it.

Ya he says that there is some stains on the seats, some seams came undone and thats how he bought it. The boat originally came from the USA so I imagine he got a good deal. I was thinking of getting one out of the USA but not sure if I want to go through all that hassle. The average price for a bayliner 175 for that year in my area is about 12,000-15000. I know pricey for a entry level used boat. This is the best time to buy as winter is around the corner.

I was in the market looking at boats about that age. I found a 18-20ft w/ a 4.3L v6 were going for about $4.5k USD in Rochester (2 hour drive to Canada border). I ended up getting my 2000 1900 SC Maxum for $7500 w/ new prop. A dealer wanted to sell me a 17' 1997 SeaRay for $6500 w/ a 3.0L motor.

TBH the season is coming the a close, if I were you, I would spend some more time into researching the cost of boats, taking a look at a few comparing what you want on a spreadsheet, before you dive in.

Ya thats true, Ill do some more searching around and see what is avalible. By the sounds of things, it sounds like searay and glastrons are the best boats. I did see this Glastron in the link below. The bonus for me is that is that I dont have to travel far to get it. The negative is that the existing motor is blown. It comes with a replacement motor. I was thinking I could do the work my self. How hard could it be to swap the motor?

I wouldn't buy one that needs a new motor swapped in regardless if the new motor is actually "new". If it was the same motor as the last, you wouldn't have to worry about different gear ratios for the outdrive. But, you have to worry about engine alignment and other things. You would definitely want something that is water ready. Plus, if it was so easy, I think the owner could have at least done it himself and get more money for the boat.

We looked in the U.S. for a boat, but bought locally. Buying in the U.S. is not a big deal. Rule of thumb seems to be if you spend under 10k stay in Canada. We were prepared to spend 25k in the U.S.

An interesting thing about the Canadian boats...which are overpriced compared to the U.S boats is the condition which is one of the main reasons for the price difference.
To be honest, boats I see which are 10-15 years old in Florida and some of the other southern states look completely worn right out with the upholstery baked, ripped or missing. It looks like these things never had a break...no wonder the price is low.
Around these parts that boat would probably have quite a bit of life left in it.
Up here our shorter season keeps the boats around a bit longer so an older boat hands onto its resale value longer.
Now, on the upside those in the southern U.S who have worked to keep their older boat up in condition could make quite a few bucks selling them north of the border if they chose to.
