Sirs,

I have checked and found defective rectifiers (20 Amp) becasue my batteries are dead.
I have Tachometer reading but no battery charging...
Were I live in Venezuela is very difficult to find new rectifier. So, my question is: Can I repair defective rectifier?
I?ve been trying to remove the hard transparent silicone behind the aluminum case and found a dark area (burned silicone because maybe overheating electronic components)
I will try to check and to install new condensers and diodes...
Have you heard about repair this rectifiers??
If you have any experience on this, please let me know.
Another question: My engine has 02 rectifiers.(20Amp each one). If I repair only one, will be enough to charge the batteries???

Thanks

Carlos, the engine needs both regulaters, that engine has regulaters not rectifiers, the mercury stuff don't last long I replace it with CDI/Rapair electronics. You might ck on liner and the may ship overseas. There is no repair to the regulars at the field service level. I believe even Rapair has stopped repairing as it's as expencive as new.
Just checked and there is a CDI distributer at Lecheria, Venezuela there name is R.B.Servicios Marinos tele.(58)281-281-4698 cell 414-820-2196

Thanks...

Yes, I know to Mr. Barreto...I will try to contact him in order to find the solution of my problem.
I was only trying to review internal elctronic parts of the regulator, becasue I?ve repaired some automotive computers and I think that I can repair these kind of parts with multitester and checking.

I disagree with Laddies. You can run one regulator if their isn't much load on the system. Just be sure the wires, both red and yellow, that would go to the other one don't short out. (tape em off) Sometimes we set up the 2 regulator system so one feeds the cranking battery, the other feeds auxiliary batteries. The only thing in common is ground.

The old 9 amp systems just had a rectifier, and let the battery boil off any excess power. 16 amp systems had the same rectifier, and a shunt type voltage regulator (maybe) 20 amp modules need to be regulated or you're gonna fry something.

If you figure out the regulators, I'm interested. I have 2 burnt ones also. I think I'll try to depot one of them.

hope it helps

Re: 1994 2.5L Rectifier Repair

j martian, I agree with the idea that the engine will run on one regulator, it will run with no regulators, lets take them both off tape up the wires and use a portable charger to keep the batteries up!
I thought the original question was can, I repair a rectifier and the anwser is still NO! and I think if Mercury could have saved a buck and gotten away with a 20 amp system they would have. Each repair one does reflects on himself as does poor mechanical advice. I have been a professional mechanic all my life, I have learned that if the manufacture puts something on a engine they did it for a reason and to omit parts is never a good idea, it don't matter if it's a rectifier, wire tie, nut, bolt or whatever. I don't do those kind of repairs, apparently your shop does.
