I have a 1995 Evinrude E40ELEO, 2 cyl, 2 stroke, Electric start, electric T/T.
I just hooked up a VDO speedometer with the OEM harness that plugs into the OMC control box.
What should be the normal idle RPMs and what is typical max RPMs?
I have been idling about 1200 and WOT about 7000.
I am hoping the DIP switches are set correctly. There is conflicting information I found that states my charging system is a 10 pole or 12 pole. want to make sure I set the tach correctly.
Thanks!

Those numbers are too high. Which pole setting is that?

I did on land, idle was about 1000rpm.
I read conflicting info on that motor being a 12 pole, not a 10, and that Faria and other manufacturers had their instructions wrong
I know you said that already. Motor should idle, warmed up and in the water....in gear, at 650 to 700 rpm's. Cold not in gear? 1000 wouldn't surprise me. Now 7000 at WOT? That's way off unless your prop is junk. You will need to get it back in the water to test correctly and may need to adjust engine idle speed. Does it sound like it's idling to fast? Most experienced people can somewhat tell be listening.

Idle sounds perfect. I do have some tech experience, mostly auto/MC. I agree WOT should only be around 6k max.
I am leaning to the install sheet being incorrect.
Going to try to call VDO. Tomorrow.
Thanks

With that year and horse power they would want you to be between 5000 and 5500 rpm's. Not 6000. Calling vdo is probably best.

So I called VDO, no help there!
They told me to try different settings. I asked, will another setting be correct? The instructions are definitely wrong. They had no idea.
Waste of money!

I am my local shop!
I bought this boat for myself, ordered the tach through my service dept.
Hard to find OEM tachs, assumed VDO made a good product

So, I decided to check the stator wires. There are (2). As per evinrude info, 6 pulse, 12 pole.
Problem solved (?)

I found that info on OEM tach instructions.
Wasn’t sure if that would be the info I needed, but based on more research and trial/error it must be correct.
VDO and my Yamaha tech gave me incorrect information.
